This is a one semester interdisciplinary elective course where students will learn
techniques to face everyday situations requiring them to speak persuasively and
confidently. This interactive course will teach skills in effective speaking as students
will debate, participate in mock job and college interviews, and deliver formal speeches.
Students will be expected to participate in the progress of peers by providing helpful
critique and will be encouraged to receive criticism gracefully.

Speech Topics (a sample listing)
Speech of Ceremony (Toast, Eulogy, Acceptance, Tribute)
Instructors and classmates will evaluate each speech or learning experience. Students
will complete written and/or verbal evaluations. Instructors will give students a basic
rubric that outlines key skills. Throughout the semester, students will receive a variety
of feedback, on which the instructors will assess their individual growth and progress.
Students’ grades will reflect not only speech delivery skills but also active participation
during individual critique.
Class participation is a necessary component of this course. Excessive absences will
impact your overall grade since we cannot recreate an audience outside of class. If you
cannot deliver on an assigned date due to unpreparedness you will be expected to
deliver the following class with a full grade deduction. Speech assignments will be
posted in the classroom as well as on our web sites so know your date and be ready to
present on time for full credit.
We are available after school if you have concerns or questions regarding an upcoming
presentation. Make an appointment and we will accommodate you.
