MONEY MATTERS PROJECT SUMMARY
Age Concern Southampton (ACS) has been serving older people resident in Southampton
for over 50 years. It is a well-respected independent charity which provides a range of
services including Information & Advice, Befriending, Health & Wellbeing, one-to-one
computer classes, a subsidised gardening service and a day care centre. Our key aim is to
promote independence and wellbeing and improve the quality of life for older people living
in our City.
ACS employs a small team of friendly and dedicated staff, and has a Board of Trustees and
over 150 volunteers supporting the charity in all aspects of its business.
About the Project
Funded by Comic Relief for three years, the Money Matters project aims to help more
elderly people access information, advice and support in order to help alleviate poverty and
deprivation across the City.
ACS will be working in partnership with The Environment Centre (TEC) who will carry out
home energy efficiency checks and ensure older people stay warm in winter.
Key to the success of the project will be the recruitment of volunteers and ‘Good
Neighbours’ from within the City’s most deprived communities to help residents who are
most vulnerable and living in poverty. The target areas include Thornhill,
Weston/Woolston, Redbridge and Lordshill. Hard-to-reach groups from Black and Minority
Ethnic (BME) communities will also be encouraged to participate in this project.
The project co-ordinator will have overall responsibility for the development,
implementation and delivery of this project, as well as monitoring and evaluating its progress
and ensuring its long-term sustainability.
