							Welcome to the home page of the Division of Forensic Psychiatry, Western University.
Writing this letter provided an opportunity to reflect on the primary reasons I chose a career
in forensic psychiatry: it is an exceptionally interesting and challenging field where one has
the day-to-day opportunity to help, and advocate for, some of society’s most vulnerable,
marginalized, and stigmatized people.

At Western University, this is a particularly exciting time to work in forensic psychiatry. Our
goal is to be the leader in forensic mental health science in Southwestern Ontario and
beyond. To that end, we recently updated and finalized our Division of Forensic Psychiatry’s
strategic plan. Examples of the types of initiatives we are currently prioritizing include:

    1) implementing evidence-based risk assessment instruments and risk management
       instruments;
    2) offering and researching mental health interventions that maximize each client’s
       recovery;
    3) building and strengthening our academic training programs; and
    4) increasing our academic and community partnerships.

Clinically, our interdisciplinary team members work closely together with each of our
patients utilizing a recovery-oriented treatment philosophy – one that prioritizes individual
choice and personal goals, builds on strengths, and instills hope. Academically, we are
committed to advancing the scientific evidence base in our ever-evolving field, and we want
to be known for the exceptional educational opportunities that we provide our trainees in all
of our disciplines (see Education and Training section). The Royal College of Physicians and
Surgeons of Canada has recently formalized forensic psychiatry as an official and
examinable psychiatric sub-specialty, and we are currently working towards fellowship
accreditation.

All of this exciting change is transpiring as we move into a brand new and newly named
state-of-the-art forensic hospital in Elgin County in 2013 (see virtual tour). Most
importantly, this new facility will provide a physical environment, both internally and the
surrounding land, that will maximize patient rehabilitation in preparation for community re-
integration. The new building and space will also significantly enhance the quality of work
life for our staff.

These are only a few of the many reasons why it is such an exciting and intellectually
stimulating time to join the Division of Forensic Psychiatry, Western University. If you have
questions, would like additional information, or are interested in exploring opportunities
within our division, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Respectfully,

Craig A. Beach, M.D., M.Sc., D.A.B.P.N.
