Reading Strategies: Main Idea of a story or passage, Choose a “Good Fit” book, Use Fundations to help
Spelling/Fundations: Digraphs (two consonants that make one sound) – sh, th, ch, ck & wh; words
with qu and x
Spelling List #1 - The list is on the back of this newsletter. Please have your child begin to study the
words as soon as possible. The concept will be taught during the beginning of the week. A Parent
Letter will be sent home for an entire Unit, which will most often cover two weeks of spelling words (2
lists per Unit).
Spelling Homework: Due on or before Fri. of each week.
Daily 5 is a management tool I use in the classroom to enable me to have Guided Reading groups. The
students began two of the components, “Read to Self” and “Read to Someone”. The next components
to be introduced are “Work on Writing” and “Work on Words”.
Topic 1: Understanding Addition and Subtraction: Writing subtraction sentences, Stories about
separating, Stories about comparing, Connecting addition and subtraction.
Please have your child begin practicing addition facts up to 18 in order to get ready for the five-minute
drills that will start in a few weeks.
Please remember that every year begins with a review of concepts that were taught the previous year in
order to build a strong foundation for the new concepts.

The green School Communication folders are to be used by all primary PRSD students. Please use it to send
homework, notes, and all communication to school.
The children and I are having a very good “settling in” together. We are learning our new friends’ names and getting
to know our routines. We are off to a very good start. Next week will bring a true routine and schedule along with
some homework. Please remember that the Spelling homework is handed in by Thurs. or Fri. and Math is handed in
every day. Your child may hand the Spelling homework in whenever he/she has it completed and need not
wait until Thurs. or Fri. Reading Logs will begin the following week.
