									Microbiological Sampling
When visual evidence of water damage, unpleasant odors or visible
growth of bacteria or fungi is present, it may be prudent to
recommend the collection of bulk and/or air samples to identify
species and estimate airborne concentrations of these organisms.
Several sampling protocols exist for the collection of microbial
species and the results can sometimes be difficult to interpret. We
recommend consulting with an accredited or well-respected
microbiological laboratory as well as looking at one or more of the
microbiological sampling references in this guideline before
collecting any samples. To do this type of sampling, the Divisional
Industrial Hygienist will have to develop a well thought out sampling
strategy that considers the total number of samples, sample
locations (contaminant and control areas), sample duration, total
cost and how the data will be interpreted. Fortunately, in many
cases, microbial contamination can be visually identified and
carefully cleaned up or removed without extensive air and bulk
sampling. However, in some cases, comprehensive sampling data
may be required if pathogenic species are present or for
documentation if future litigation is possible.
