Job Title:                          Nursing Sister

Reporting To:                       Senior Nurse in Charge

Responsible For: School’s medical services during your hours of duty
                 under the direction of the Senior Nurse in Charge.

Department:                         Sanatorium

Job Purpose:                       To provide a clinically effective, high quality of
                                   nursing care and health education to the pupils.
                                   Ensuring excellent standards of pupil welfare are
                                   maintained at all times, meeting the requirements of
                                   the National Minimum Standards for Boarding
                                   Schools.


General

Rugby School was founded in 1567 by Lawrence Sheriff, a Rugby born member of the
Guild of Grocers who was awarded his coat of Arms by Queen Elizabeth 1st. One of the
older schools in England, it is the top co-educational school among the country’s
independent schools and is internationally acclaimed and famous throughout the world
with an outstanding reputation for academic excellence.

There are currently 800 pupils aged 13 to 18 at Rugby School. The ratio of boys to girls
throughout school is approximately 55:45. It also has a large sixth form of around 360
students. The School has 15 houses, which comprises 13 houses for boarding pupils and
2 day houses.

The School also employs around 580 staff. Based at the Sanatorium are two School
Doctors, the School Counsellor, a part-time Secretary and four other Nursing Sisters that
work on a rota basis during term-time only.

Due to the varied nature of the role, the following is a list of the typical duties and
responsibilities which is meant to be illustrative rather than exhaustive.


Key Accountabilities

Role within the School
        Involvement in all health related aspects of School life.
        Ensuring that the Sanatorium is a welcoming place for pupils and staff.
        Provide medical advice and first aid kits for staff taking pupils on trips
        Provide first aid kits for Games and all trips, and ensure that stock of all first aid
         kits are maintained and are checked weekly.
        To build up good working relationship with the boarding Housemasters and
         Housemistresses and Matrons.
        To carry out any other duties as required in a pro-active way and to accept the
         School’s principles of teamwork and flexibility.

General management of Sanatorium
        Ensure high standards of care and support for pupils at the Sanatorium
        Maintain appropriate records accurately, confidentially and safely.
        To keep nursing records to a high standard, ensuring the accurate and rapid
         retrieval of information.
        To record dispensing of drugs in line with the School’s drug protocols.
        Communicate with staff, parents and pupils via telephone and email
        Ensure that the Sanatorium is well stocked and has appropriate equipment and
         medical supplies, checking all expiry dates regularly.
        Communicate and liaise with the two School Doctors, Physiotherapist and
         Counsellor
        Report any Child Protection concerns as per policy
        To operate procedures for the safe disposal of clinical waste.

Care of pupils.
        Maintain confidentiality
        Add relevant information to iSAMS (database)
        Communicate with parents by telephone or email, and contacting parents when
         pupils are unwell and need to be collected
        Communicate with House Staff
        Provide immediate nursing care for pupils when ill or injured, and provide
         treatment as appropriate
        Perform new pupil medical examinations
        Leavers’ Health Checks
        If necessary, coordinate the transfer of any pupils to the A&E department
        To assess, implement and evaluate in-patient care of pupils admitted to the San.

    Health Education.

       To promote health education throughout the School population.
       To ensure the provision of and access to a range of publicity materials on issues
        relating to student health.
       To provide information on current Health Education topics, keeping all notices in
        the San updated with all the relevant information.




    All employees of Rugby School have a responsibility for promoting and safeguarding
                         the welfare of children and young people

Other information

        Hours of Work will be up to 20 hours per week, term time only. The exact
         attendance hours will be agreed with the Senior Nurse in Charge, but will include
         working some afternoons, evenings and weekends, with on call duties from home
         and very occasional overnight stay in the San, as required,

        Hourly week day rate : £13.56 / hour and

        Enhanced weekend hourly rates : £20.34 / hour
