The Organization of Black Social Work Students (OBSW) First Meeting Wednesday, September 30th from 1:15-1:45 p.m. Thursday, October 1st from 12:45-2 p.m. Room 208 OBSWS invites students to its first meeting of the year. Two dates have been selected back-to-back to allow all students who would like to come, a chance to meet, ask questions, present ideas for upcoming year, and discuss membership. Students may bring their lunches with them or enjoy light refreshments that will be served. Student Organization Office: The Student Organization, room 224, has computers available to all matriculated students to use for school-related purposes and for the student organization officers. Articles can not be printed from these computers. Photocopier: Photocopy machines for student use are available on the main floor of the Trecker Library. A small copier is also available in the SSW room 209. HuskyOne Card: If you have not obtained your HuskyOne Card, you can still have your photo taken. The Fall 2009 photo schedule is available on the School’s website at www.sswstudents.uconn.edu. ID’s may be picked up at the SSW Registrar/Student Services Office. HuskyMail: The official UConn student mail system and primary form of communication to students is HuskyMail. Students are encouraged to check their account regularly for important announcements. Career Resources and Services for MSW students: The School of Social Work is dedicated to providing career resources and services to its students. Students are encouraged to visit the Career Services webpage at www.sswstudents.uconn.edu for weekly employment opportunities, career services events, and much more! Writing Assistance for Fall 2009: Individual writing assistance will be available to SSW students during the fall semester. Please email Milagros.MarreroJohnson@uconn.edu to arrange an appointment at least one week in advance with the writing consultant. School of Social Work Contact Information: You can find contact information for the School’s departments and offices, faculty, staff and administration at www.sswstudents.uconn.edu. Department Mailboxes: SSW Departments have mailboxes located on the 1st floor in the Registrar/ Student Services Office, Room 130. Materials left at the window will be placed in the appropriate mailbox. Faculty mailboxes are located on the 3rd floor outside of room 317. Seminar/Conference Reimbursements: Matriculated students who choose to join a professional social work organization or attend a social work-related seminar/conference may request up to a maximum of $50 reimbursement per academic year for their expenses. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY Friend to Friend Connecticut Outreach Programs
Friend to Friend is an initiative that seeks to help persons experiencing the loneliness and isolation of prolonged mental illness. We are recruiting volunteer partners to accompany someone in various social and recreational activities such as going to a movie, out for coffee, shopping, or sharing a hobby. We ask volunteers spend 2-4 hours a week for a 12-month period. 2009-2010 Student Handbook: All students will receive a student handbook in their mailbox the first week of classes. The handbook includes: a useful planner, information on important offices, school and university policies, academic information, curriculum, fees and expenses, financial aid, student organization, etc. The handbook is also available at www.sswstudents.uconn.edu. Student Mailboxes: All matriculated students have a mailbox assigned to them, located on the 2nd floor. Please take the mail in the box under your name! If you find you do not have a box, please contact Milagros Marrero-Johnson. Student Lounge: The Student Lounge is located in the lower level of the SSW building. It is equipped with a microwave, refrigerator, comfortable chairs and a sofa. Students are encouraged to take advantage of this ideal space. Student Study Room: Student Study Room is located in room 209 on the 2nd floor. The study room is accessible space for students to study and use their laptops. Lost & Found: Please check the lost & found box in the student study, room 209, if you happen to leave something behind in a classroom. Student Lockers: Student lockers are located on the 2nd floor and are available on a first-come, first-serve
