Right now, the Canadians are on
tenterhooks waiting to see whether
they’re going to get the $32 million they
have applied for from the Canadian
government to get the project rolling;
many other countries whose researchers
are involved in the effort are also being
asked to chip in. “One of the most
difficult things,” says Welch, is
persuading people “just how desperately
we need this information— because
we’ve never had it.”
