History
The property where the Berwick Hotel was built was bought by Joseph Taylor
in 1866. He built his house on the site until the 1880s when he moved into his
Queen Anne style house on the other side of town. The old house was torn
down to make room for the larger structure covering the entire lot. Taylor chose
the name Berwick from his brides hometown of North Berwick, Maine. The hotel
opened to much celebration on 1887-08-16.
                                                                                                                 Berwick Hotel in Cambridge, Ohio.
The hotel was partially burned down in the fire of 1891 that wiped out much of
the northern side of Wheeling Avenue. Taylor rebuilt the hotel which reopened
in 1894 under the supervision of J.P. Murdough. When fire wiped out much of
the block again in 1895 the hotel was spared due to a fire wall built on its east
side. The hotel was leased to Charles Mast and H.V. Atkinson around the same
time and remained as supervisors until the 1930s, when the hotel opened as
apartments. The hotel has continued to serve this function to this date.
