The Terry Fox Run and the School Cross Country Team
For the last two weeks students at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel have been involved
in preparing for the school’s Terry Fox run on Sept. 29th , as well as training for the
cross country team. Students have had the opportunity to run in their gym classes and
before lunch 2 or 3 times a week. The distance each student and class has completed
has been recorded and tabulated on a daily basis.
Teachers have talked with their students about how Terry Fox is a perfect
example of a true Canadian hero who “Made a Difference”. Our students are aware
that his Marathon of Hope in 1980 ended abruptly outside of Thunder Bay when cancer
appeared in his lungs. It has become our school goal to attempt to “complete” Terry’s
run across Canada by running a combined distance of 2,986 km, the distance from
Thunder Bay, Ontario to Vancouver, B.C. So far, after a little over one week, our
school total is almost 650 km! As an added incentive, the class that runs the greatest
distance will receive a free pizza lunch.
Parents are welcome to send in a small donation which the school will submit to
the Terry Fox Foundation on behalf of the Mt. Carmel school community. For every
dollar a student brings in, they will be able to enter their name into a draw for a chance
to win an official Terry Fox t-shirt. As one final incentive, if our school is able to raise
$500 dollars, I have agreed to allow the staff to give me a “make-over”, and will
complete the run wearing a dress, make-up and wig on Sept. 29th!
All of this running will also benefit those students in grade 4 to 8 who wish to be
part of the cross country team. There are two meets that they can enter: the first is the
Eagles Run at St. Anne’s on Sept. 28th , after school; and the second is the System Meet
at Ben Miller on Oct. 14th. Permission forms and more information will be sent home
shortly for those students interested in representing our school at these meets.
