letter to aad parents by Guttermouth

The 2009 – 2010 season is fast approaching - our first day in the pool is Monday,
September 14th. Hopefully by then, the Town will have completed all of the necessary
maintenance (including replacing the tiles on the pool bottom) and we will be on our way!

There are a number of things that we want to bring to your attention.

can see, there are a number of vacancies. Please contact anyone on the Executive to
learn how you can be a part of your child’s swimming experience. Meetings are held

Coaching Staff

Liane Avouac Head Coach and Junior/Senior Coach
Eva Papp Novice Program Coach
Rose Thompson Learn to Swim & Advanced LTS Coach

We are again anticipating an increase in our enrollment this year. While this is great
news, we are faced with the task of allocating pool time so each group is equally served.
We have arranged with the Town to add an extra ½ hour on Mondays and Wednesdays
so we have more flexibility this year. Consequently, we have made the following

Learn to Swim Program

Coach Rose’s “Yellow” program will add an additional class this year, bringing the total to
four. Swimmers learning their basic swim strokes will have 45 minutes per week in the
pool with the following options. Class size is limited to 8 swimmers.

       LTS (A): Monday 5:30 – 6:15 pm
       LTS (B) Monday 6:15 – 7:00 pm
       LTS (C) Wednesday 5:30 – 6:15 pm
       LTS (D) Wednesday 6:15 – 7:00 pm

Advanced Learn to Swim Program

Coach Rose’s “Green” program will increase to 2 hours of instruction per week, but note
that the days are changed. Sessions will now be held Tuesdays and Thursdays (no
Monday sessions). There is one class offered with a maximum of 18 swimmers.
               Tuesday 7:30 – 8:30 pm
               Thursday 7:30 – 8:30 pm

Novice Program

Coach Eva’s Novice Program, which gently introduces swimmers to the joys of
competition, will again offer 3 hours of instruction on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
However, please note that the times will start one hour later each day. Class size is
limited to 15 - 18 swimmers.

Monday 6:30 – 7:30 pm
Wednesday 6:30 – 7:30 pm
Friday 6:30 – 7:30 pm

Please Note: The biggest change to this program is the cost of the mandatory
insurance. SwimOntario, the provincial regulatory body, has decreed that swimmers in
this group who wish to attend more than one swim meet per year, must be insured at the
same level as Junior and Senior swimmers. As our Novice swimmers usually attend at
least three swim meets per year, this can be a sizeable increase in fees. Those
swimmers who are registered at the “non-competitive” level have their designation
changed at any time during the year by paying the insurance differential. See the
Registration Fees schedule for more detail. We can answer your questions at any time
(through phone or email) or at the registration desk.

Junior Program
Coach Liane will again offer five hours of instruction per week for swimmers entering into
their competitive swim program, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Monday 5:30 – 7:00 pm
Wednesday 5:30 – 7:00 pm
Friday 5:30 – 7:30 pm

Senior Program

Coach Liane’s Senior program, where swimmers fully participate in competitions
throughout the season, will again offer 7 ½ hours of instruction per week, Monday
through Friday. However, the times change this year:

Monday 6:00 – 7:30 pm
Tuesday 7:30 – 9:00 pm
Wednesday 6:00 – 7:30 pm
Thursday 7:30 – 8:30 pm
Friday 5:30 – 7:30 pm

Teen/Rusty Duck Programs

For the teenagers and “older” swimmers who want to undertake their own exercise
program, we again offer lane swims on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Tuesday 7:30 – 8:30 pm
Thursday 7:30 – 8:30 pm
Friday 5:30 – 6:30 pm
                                           SWIM FEES

The Aqua Ducks have strived to offer a full swim program at a very competitive price and
will do so again this year. Over the years, we have continuously set our fees to be
comparable to municipal programs for our introductory swimmers and substantially lower
than comparable swim clubs in the surrounding area for our competitive programs. For
many years, we participated in Bingo with a number of charitable organizations in the
area, which brought in substantial funds that greatly subsidized our fees. Unfortunately,
the Bingo program has vanished, and our efforts to secure sponsorships, through the
very generous support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, has been at best a moderate

Our Trillium funding, which in the upcoming year will subsidize 20% of our expenses
(down from 40% this past year), will run out at the end of this new season (October
2010), and we will at that time be faced with the harsh reality of an increase in
registration fees in order to survive.

We rent our pool time from the Town of Halton Hills, at a rate of about $2400 per month
and each year, the Town increases the rental fee. For 2009 – 2010, the rental increase
     will be about 5%.

As we continue to increase our enrollment, we can continue to offer swim programs at a
very competitive rate. However, a quick survey of clubs in the immediate area indicates
that we are substantially below the norm in fees. For example, one area club charges in
the order of $3500.00 per year for their competitive swim program (our comparable rate
is currently about $750.00 for our Senior competitive program – our most expensive

While we do not anticipate that we will ever be as expensive as other clubs, we must face
the fact that costs will continue to rise over the next few years, unless we are fortunate
     to secure major sponsorship funding.

For 2009 – 2010, fees will increase at a modest amount. We are confident that our
programs will continue to be the best value for your swimming dollar in the Region.

For 2009 – 2010, program fees per session are as follows:

Program Cost Insurance Total Program Cost Insurance* Total
Learn to Swim $ 71.35 $13.65 $85.00 Novice Competive

Acton Fall Fair & Parade

The annual Fall Fair and parade takes place on Saturday, September 19th, only one week
into our Fall session. There is plenty of room on the float for the younger swimmers
(older ones can walk!) and remember that being in the parade gets you free admission to
the Fair. We’ll have more details at the registration desk.
