The Linden Letter

The Linden Letter Psalm 126 A song of ascents. 1 [a] When the LORD brought back the captives to Zion, we were like men who dreamed. [b] 2 Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, "The LORD has done great things for them." 3 The LORD has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy. 4 Restore our fortunes, [c] O LORD, like streams in the Negev. 5 Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy. 6 He who goes out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him. September, 2009 In this psalm, the theological theme of restoration is woven together with the theme of rejoicing. The product is one of the grandest, most eloquent lyrical prayers in the Psalter. Throughout the Biblical narratives, we encounter men, women and even entire nations who have had their lives restored by Jehovah. The restoration of Sarah to Abraham, the restoration of Joseph to Jacob and his brothers, the restoration of the people to the land after the Exodus, the restoration of the ark to the people after the Philistines captured it, the birth of the Messiah; the restoration of Jesus to his parents, the healing miracles and the resurrection are but a few examples of restoration. “Put back something that was once but is no longer there” is one definition of “restoration.” Another is, “to return something to its proper owner or place.” Many of you know what it means to have a home restored, a car restored or perhaps even a marriage or life restored. A lot of hard work was involved but, in the end, the final product was better than anything that you could have imagined and definitely worth the wait. Jesus was a man who spoke a word of hope to a woman beside a well and restored her stolen identity. Jesus tells us that the unclean, the outcast and those marginalized by society will be given a “flash pass” to the head of the line as they enter the Kingdom of God. As the outer manifestation of the body of Christ the church must be in the “restoration business.” The sinner must be offered mercy, the physically and mentally broken must be offered hope, the spiritually wounded must be shown the path of love that leads to Jesus. The dead must be raised. Helping to restore homes through Habitat for Humanity, serving dinner to the homeless, singing to the shut-ins, teaching Sunday School, praying for one another and showing mercy and compassion to all are but a few of the ways that God can use us to help others come to know the width and depth of God’s love. Being the conduit by which God brings forth restoration in another’s life is truly an awesome experience: whether restoring a broken identity or restoring a broken home, God can use our hearts and our hands to “return something to its proper owner or place.” As your time of summer restoration ends, I hope that you will return to Linden Heights with a song in your heart so that we may proclaim with one voice … “The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.” In God’s peace, Karen September Highlights Thursday, September 10 6:30PM 8:00 PM 9:15 AM Bell Choir Rehearsal Begins Chancel Choir Rehearsals Begin Sunday School Begins – meet in the Sanctuary Dedication of Sunday School Teachers Choir Retreat Prayer Vigil Visioning Dinner and Planning Sunday, September 13 (Balloon Sunday) 9:15 & 11:00 AM Saturday, September 19 Friday, September 25 Sunday, September 27 9:00 AM 7:00 PM 6:00 PM Fall Worship Schedule Starting September 13, 2009 Sunday school 9:15 AM Informal service 9:15 AM Traditional service 11:00 AM Flea Market We are having a flea market on Saturday, October 3rd. This is a big problem in Cecil County that is largely ignored by the government of Cecil County. There are churches in the area that are helping out, but they could also use our help. The Mission’s Committee would like to prepare a meal and serve the homeless on th September 20 . Please sign the signup sheet in the narthex if you would like to participate. If you have any questions, please call Jim Hedgespeth at 410-4937569. Baltimore County Christian Workcamp Vincent Ingalla and Jim Hedgespeth participated in the 2009 Baltimore County th Christian Workcamp July 19 – 24 . Volunteering in this organization is very rewarding. We had a lot of fun working side by side with other volunteers helping renovate homes for people that can’t afford to make necessary repairs to their homes. To find out more about the 2009 Baltimore County Christian Workcamp, go to the Linden Heights website, www.lindenheights.org. Click on BCCW. - Jim Hedgespeth Food Box The food box continues to be an enormous success. Check out the chart on the Missions Corner on bulletin board in the narthex. It shows that we have delivered 308 pounds of food so far. The Parkville/Carney Community Assistance Network has all the food they need for now. There are still other agencies and areas that still need our help. The larger #10 cans are especially desired because it is much easier to feed a large group of people with one can instead of fixing many different items for a large group. Linden Height’s webpage – www.lindenheights.org There are some new updates to the Linden Heights webpage. There is a new Policies and Forms page where you can download the Linden Heights Safe Sanctuary Policies and Forms.
