                 摘        要


  随着中国改革开放进程的不断深入,中国制造走向世界,与国际市场接轨。中国
制造已逐步走向世界市场。中国进出口贸易在纷繁复杂的国际形势中正在不断突破和超
越自我,国际外贸形势呈现出总体稳步前进的趋势,宠物用品行业更是兴兴向荣。
  各类宠物用品公司如雨后春笋般涌现,本文从泰州宠物用品外贸公司入手,分析当
前宠物行业外贸形势,追溯宠物行业的起源和发展背景,了解该行业相关产品、生产流
程,从而了解宠物用品行业的整体架构。
  通过调查询问公司员工以及阅读公司历年数据报告,分析该企业存在的问题 ,找
出相应的可实施对策。最后基于宠物用品行业外贸现状分析该行业的发展前景。
  中国宠物用品行业日趋专业化,规模化的同时,也正面临着前所未有的挑战。企业
应该结合自身的实际发展情况,对企业管理模式,企业文化进行改革创新,树立高品质,
创品牌理念,只有这样,企业才能在国内外市场立于不败之地。

                                    ABSTRACT


      With China’s deepening of reform and opening-up policy, China’s manufacturers start
thinking globally. Quite a number of them have already entered into the international market.
Under the complex circumstances, Chinese foreign traders are making constant efforts to
break through and transcend themselves. The international trade is showing a general up trend
throughout the world. Pet supplies industry is accordingly developing vigorously.
      Pet supplies companies in China spring up like mushroom in spring. From the
investigation and observation of Taizhou Pet Supplies Foreign Trading Company, the author
traces the origin and the history background of pet industry, then examines closely the pet
products and the process of production, finally depicts a clear picture of the pet supplies
industry both home and abroad.
      By looking into the data and annual reports of Taizhou Pet Supplies Foreign Trading
Company and interviewing the working staff, the author attempts to identify the existing
problems and then seeks the countermeasures. Based on the current development of pet
products industry, the author looks to its prospect and puts forward some suggestions as to
how to prosper in this field.
      Nowadays, pet supplies industry is increasingly specialized and companies are going
larger-scaled, which poses an unprecedented challenge to Chinese pet supplies companies. To
expand the business, companies should better their management by building an inspiring and
innovative company culture, making “pursuit of high quality products and customers’
satisfaction” as their business philosophy. By doing this way can Chinese pet supplies
companies create self brands and get ahead of their competitors in the market.

Chapter One Introduction
      With the policy of reform and opening-up and the development of a socialist
market economy, China's economy has drastically changed. It has played an
increasingly important part in international trade. In 2010 China is the second largest
economy in the world, surpassing Japan. But, it’s still facing the challenge to develop
economy, science and technology. Governments have taken many measures and
policies to encourage and help enterprises and people to go out, following the global
trend and getting involved in the fierce competition. Besides, globalization and Internet
also allow more and more people to participate in economic activities.
      According to the China’s Import and Export Trade Finance report in 2010,
domestic demands rose steadily and imports had maintained a high growth. In June
import growth rose to 34.1%. With the world economic recovery, the overseas demand
began to pick up. As a result China’s exports came to see a rapid growth after
recession. Short-term factors such as the Spring Festival, they led to exports less than
imports in the first four month. But in the following 2 months from May to June the
exports rose by 43.9%. Steady increases of both exports and imports maintained a
balanced development in China’s international trade.
      Nowadays, affluent material life enables people to enrich and diversify their life.
Other factors such as one-child family or DINK family also contribute a lot to the
change of people’s life. It can be easily seen that an increasing number of Chinese
people take up pet keeping, traveling and online shopping. And the related business
and industry create a drastic boom in both developed and developing countries. In
pet-keeping area, pet supplies have become one of the growing and lucrative markets
for global businesses to target at. How to meet the demands of overseas markets
remains a big issue for Chinese Pet Supplies Foreign Trading Companies. How to
compete with foreign companies and successfully occupy the market share in the
international market and how to strengthen the market presence and then to expand it
are the challenging problems for Chinese pet suppliers to work at.

      The reasons why the author takes pet supplies trading as the topic of her paper
are as follows: firstly, it is the industry that the author is presently engaged in; secondly,
pet industry has just come to its prosperous stage. It has huge potential to explore. By
doing research on this industry, the author expects to obtain a full picture of the
development of the industry, and to acquire knowledge of the pet products and foreign
trading practices.
      This paper aims to investigate the current situation of pet supplies trading, and to
analyze the major problems existing in China’s pet supplies trading industry by looking
into Taizhou Pet Supplies Trade Company, in an attempt to provide useful information
and suggestions for some relevant pet supplies companies and employed people.

Chapter Two Rising of the Pet Industry

2.1 The Rising of Pet Market and Enterprise Abroad
      Hundreds of years ago, westerners had begun to keep pets. They were used to
keeping pets as a member of the family. After that, some people were engaged in
related activities and sideline products on pets. Pets in the developed countries as
industry have a history of two centuries. It has formed breeding, training, supplies,
medicine, trade and industrial chains. Lots of governments and pet organizations have
strict regulations in the management. The pet industry's developments take a
systematic and standardized running form in the national economy.
      Pets’ consumption for the U.S. economy in 2001 created 276 billion dollars.
Germany, 17% of national income is from the pet industry. In Australia, the pet
industry has 30,000 employees, and creates nearly 6% of GDP. The international pet
market has gradually matured, pets and the national economic strength has become a
sign of social development.
      In foreign countries there are many large professional pet products company.
They have rich experience and long history in pet supplies. Compared with the
domestic pet products company, its management systems, product quality, or marketing
strategy are higher than many enterprises at home. It still has a long way to go before
keep pace with these famous abroad companies.
      Through the development of the society over the past few hundred years, the pet
market and business gradually reached a mature state. Nowadays, it has divided into a
wide variety of styles. For example: Pet Food, Pet Supplies, Pet Beauty, Pet Services,
or even the death of a pet can provide funeral services. For the booming trends of pet
market, relevant departments of many foreign governments have made measures and
regulations to help better manage the standardization of the pet market and business
development.

2.2 The Rising of Pet Industry at Home

      Compared with the foreign pet industry’s appear, China Pet Industry was late
approx several decades. Its origin probably began from the early nineties, Beijing
introduced “Beijing Dog Management Regulations” in 1994, which marks China's pet
industry was entering on the right track. From the late eighties to the early nineties,
with the spiritual life and material life were continuous improved, many families kept
pets and take it as a meaningful and indispensable entertainment, including dogs, cats,
fish, birds and some wild animals. In terms of the survey of Beijing, Guangzhou,
Shanghai, Shenyang, Tianjin and other major cities, families kept pets may take up
30~50 percent. From 1990 to the end of 1998, there are two peaks of keeping dogs.
After nearly ten years’ efforts, the pet market had made some obvious changes.
However, the whole industry is still relatively small, distribution is concentrated on a
few developed regions, and the overall development space is still huge. Therefore,
pet-related industries are still in early stages of development.
      Pet markets still in the initial period, garment factories and enterprises were just
pouring a lot in China nearly two years. On the whole, many companies or factories
ignore product quality, lack of pan-regulation, which have resulted in many side effects,
particular in export trade. How to improve products quality and solve so many
problems? How to make pet industry develop healthier? It’s very urgent to solve in the
pet industry.

Chapter Three Pet Supplies Foreign Trade Company in Tazihou

3.1 Pet Industry in Taizhou
      From the end of the century the concept of pet is quietly rising in China. The
community gradually formed after experienced a decade of rapid development, which
is better for keeping pets. However, in the recently years, foreign trade become more
difficult. For small and medium foreign enterprises, raw material prices and labor costs
rise several times. RMB appreciation and foreign trade protectionism have exacerbated
the crisis. Companies seeking their own ways become extremely urgent. On the other
hand, because of a series of pet production chains appear, sales and service business
activities have undoubtedly face new challenge and opportunity in China's economic
stage. As the international markets’ experience, this new industry will gradually grow
up and become the major pillar in a certain scale and level, and provide new
employment opportunities and revenue for the country.
3.1.1 The New Industrial Environment
      The pursuit of a higher spiritual life and international social environment, pet
industry begin to structural transformation. With the wave of reform and opening up, a
large number of "returnees" back to the home. International enterprises and famous
brands build their subsidiaries and branch factories in China. This ignites the
development of pet industry. The improvements of living standards have made people
enjoy themselves. Along with consumer groups in the mainstream society, the ways of
people’s leisure, consumption and emotional sustenance also changed. "DINK family",
“One-child” and "Singles" are stimulating the development of the pet market.
3.1.2 Development of Pet industry
      The early 20th century 90s, the first association was founded to protect small
animals. The first generation started to produce dog food in the assembly line. Since
then, China's pet industry began market segments and gradually improved. The rapid
development period is the late 20th century 90s, with the national regulations and

policies were established on the pet market. At the same time, the blossom of light
industry also enhanced the strength of domestic pet industry, which injected new blood
for this industry.
3.1.3 Upward Stage
      In the 21st century, more international brands entered into China. It gradually
affects the orientation of the overall pet market consumer. At the same time, some
domestic manufacturers also join in the domestic pet market, such as Yantai “Naughty”,
Norrish “Good master”. After more than ten years’ rapid development, a complete
industrial chain is becoming more perfect. Foreign enterprises’ eyes focus on domestic
market. As the most development perspective cities, Beijing and Shanghai as the first
line are on behalf of a higher proportion. The prefecture-level cities are next a high
proportion of services sales.

3.2 Profile of Taizhou Pet Supplies Company
      Taizhou Pet Supplies Foreign Trading Company is one of the biggest,
professional manufacturers & exporters of Pet Products Limited Companies. The
company was established in 1998 and had its own factory. It is located in Taizhou,
Jiangsu Province, which is east near Shanghai and Ningbo. For its unique geographical
location, transportation by sea is very convenient.
      Through more than 10 years developing, now it has approx 200 skilled workers
and nearly 3000 square meters workshop. Monthly production capability is 15x40"
containers. Based on superior quality, competitive price, timely deliver date and best
service, the company has gotten many supports in business from old and new clients.
As manufacturer and exporter of pet products, all items are able to pass test. The
company has got many certificates, including Certificate of AZO Free, PAH Free,
Phthalate Free, En71: Parts 3: 1994, SGS Textile Testing Report and so on. Besides, its
development team also very strong, five senior designers are responsible for open up
new and fashionable styles. They are able to make as clients’ ideas, artworks or logos.

3.2.1 History Background of the Company
      1998 Ms. Krista came alone to Taizhou, Jiangsu Province from Jiangxi Province,
rented a small room to start with her enterprise. Only one computer and one person,
everyday she was busy with finding new clients. Making every effort to catch all
inquiries and possibilities, she got more and more orders. As her consistence and
endeavor, her enterprise quickly began to obtain rewards. The company’s staff added to
10 people in 2002. Foreign trade salesmen were take charge of doing business. She
started to consider recruit more workers to build professional production processes. In
2005 her workshop made many changes, the workers increased 120 people.
      Everything seemed go well. However, the good condition just kept going until
the end of 2007. One the one hand, the financial crisis in 2008 had badly influence on
import and export. Many abroad companies went bankrupt. The internal situation was
also far from being satisfactory. On the other hand, the RMB-US dollar exchange rate
constantly breaks through records. Medium and small enterprises, especially in the
export sector, are being hit hard. Even though the position looked very bad, Ms. Krista
and her staff insist on improving quality and service on pet products. And many old
and new clients choose to cooperate with her. 2010 Pet Supplies exported to in Europe,
South Africa, America and Japan, selling the world's 10 countries, the annual sales
amount of more than 300,000 U.S. dollars. Visunpet become one of the most popular
companies among customers. Taizhou Pet Products Co., Ltd. make "fashion, quality,
service" as implementation business concept.
3.2.2 Main Products
      Pet collar, leash & harness, Pet toy, Pet mat, cushion & bed, Pet Bowl, Cat
scratcher & tree, Plush pet toy, Xmas gift bag, Small animal products, Pet carrier, Pet
sweater, Pet apparel, Pet car seat cover, Cat toy, Pet charm, grooming & ID tag are the
main products of Taizhou Pet Supplies Trading Company. As the policy of the
company, it’ll send pre-production samples for clients’ reference before mass

production. Many classic and latest products are displayed in the showroom. Designer
will update related pet products regularly.
3.2.3 Communication with Customers and Factories
      The company has three common ways to contact with the clients, at the
beginning, releasing the information on the websites. Taizhou Pet Supplies Foreign
Trade Company has two mainly promotion platform. One is the company’s website:
www.vspet.com and the other is http://visunpets.en.made-in-china.com. When foreign
salesmen replied inquires. Manager Ms. Krista required all the staff must write
company’s websites, to let more new clients know the company. Now, the company
has become the golden member of Made-in-China.
      Secondly, they always use telephone and mail to keep touching with other
factories. Some of products are produced by other factories as their technology is more
profession than themselves. For some old factories and clients, Taizhou Pet Supplies
Trade Company will invite them to visit it and organize some activities to enhance
close relationships.
      Last but not least, Trade Shows, which are of great importance. There are many
famous trade shows in domestic, such as Guangzhou Trade Fair, Shanghai Exposition
and so on. Ms Krista often takes part in these shows. It’s one of the best ways to find
clients and know some latest information of pet markets.
3.2.4 Main Export Markets




      Most of pet products export to Europe, America, Australia, New Zealand and

Japan. They are still supplying shipments for Aldi Market, Walmart, Target, Big Lots.,
Dollar Tree, and King sonic, Flamingo……
3.2.5 Best-selling Pet Products
      The rapid rise of the pet industry has the following four reasons: first, people's
living standards have improved. Under the laws of a country's per capita GDP from
3,000 to 8,000 dollars, the pet industry will be rapidly developed. Urban per capita
GDP in many cities in China has exceeded 3,000 U.S. dollars. Second, only one child
in family becomes very common as China's family planning policy. Young people were
busy with work and some separate with the elderly. So those old men felt lonely.
Furthermore, with more leisure time, residents keep pets become one part of a fixed
consumption. Fourth, competitive pressures in daily life and work, people face a lot of
confusion. However, they can not find appropriate ways to express negative emotions.
In a word, pets have lively, lovely, clever, understanding and other characteristics.
People in the breeding process tend to take it as a member of the family or as a kind of
spiritual sustenance.
      There are varieties of products selling very well among different countries’
clients. For example, Pet collar & leash, Pet bowl, Pet sweater, Pet toy……Lots of
clients inquire abut pet collar, particular in USA, Russia, UK, Europe.

3.3 Business Practices of Taizhou Foreign Trading Company
3.3.1 Enquiry and Counter-offer
      Firstly, the salesman should know the basic information about the clients before
quoting For instance, the client is a wholesale or a retail person, the information of his
or her company, annual order quantity, and the specification, quality and abilities
whether meet factories. Usually they reply the clients’ mails should be within 24 hours,
give accurate points and orderly reply. If reply late, they’d better say sorry and give
explanation. Otherwise it’ll leave a bad impression to clients. As the saying goes, first
impressions are half of the battle. Furthermore, quotations will be according to the
prices list made by the company Accounting Department. Foreign trade salesman
encloses photo quotations for clients’ reference. The acceptable price from the clients
is lower than the listed price for big orders. Salesman shall first report this to the
manager for approval.
3.3.2 Business Relationship
      After clients’ place order, workshop’s proofing chefs prepare samples and related
department should send pre-production samples before mass production. Freight
collect shall be generally required. When the samples quantity is large, the cost shall be

charged accordingly. Then, salesman will not inform workshop of preparing mass
production until got clients’ approval letter. Workshops are going to buy raw materials
and accessories. In the production processing, merchandiser shall be at the workshop to
supervise and inspect the production with the person in charge, to find and solve the
problems in time, or to report the problems to the manager of the department for
coordinating to solve, or to report to the general manager for solving, to guarantee the
specification, the quality, the packing and production time according to the
requirements of the clients.
      When all products finished, normally clients will contact its forwarders to
confirm the things of shipment, insurance, commodity inspection etc. Taizhou Pet
Supplies Foreign Trading Company usually chooses the following ways: By T/T,
30%deposit payment before mass production, 70% balance payment against copy of
B/L. Beneficiary bank and the salesman will check up the L/C in form and contents
respectively, and inform the clients to make change in time if differences existing, and
submit to the manager of the departments for re-checking after no faults or differences
found in advance
      The salesman will prepare the concerned documents (Commercial Invoice,
Packing List, Telex Release Bill) for the Customs declaration when clients pay 70%
balance payment. The salesman shall do the classification and collation of the business
documents and submit to the related accounting department.

      The growth rate of China exporting pet products rise more than 30%. The rapid
development of the pet industry also leads to the parties concerned on the quality and
safety. Although the financial turmoil sweeping the globe, the world demand for pet
products is still more than 10% average annual rate of growth. China's pet supplies
average annual output value maintain 20% of the growth rate, even create an annual
30% growth rate. It can be predicted that China is not only big consumers of pet
products, but also suppliers in the world's pet supplies production.
      The year before last year sales in Europe and the United States kept increasing
when family spend on pet. The U.S. pet products market in 2008 reached 43.4 billion
U.S. dollars, 5% increase over 2007. Therefore, China’s pet products industry has a
strong export potential. According to statistics, pet accessory of the current production
are mainly exported to the United States and northern Europe. The main export
products include dog, cat collar, leash, clothes, toys, leather dog teeth items. Generally,
high-quality of pet supplies and food safety requirements become increasingly
stringent, which enhance the competitiveness and become essential means to access
buyers.
      China's pet industry shows the following characteristics: first of all, location
characteristics significantly, coastal cities, riverside cities and border cities are the
main areas. Second, the rapid market growth, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou,
Chongqing and Wuhan are known as "China's five major pet city". Around the pet's
daily life, illness and death of pet were a rapid growth trend in consumption. According

to statistics, by 2010 China has at least 150 million pets, and its output exceeded 400
billion. Last but not least, the pet industry constantly enriches and improves the content.
Although we are still in early stages, many major cities begin to appear with
pet-related industry and signal the maturity of pet market.

Chapter Four Problems Exiting in the Company and Possible

Solutions

4.1 Problems in Taizhou Foreign Trading Company
4.1.1 Lack of Funds & Poor Management
      Recently, from the survey and some staff’s views, Taizhou Pet Supplies Co., Ltd.
has the following same questions with some other small and medium enterprises. First
of all, lack of funds, enterprise strength is not very strong. For example, if the company
has a large list, all capitals are put into in the production process and then received
another big order, the company's capital often get into trouble. How to expand and
enhance the strength of the company has become an urgent thing. Secondly, there are
obvious loopholes in management. Employee productivity is low and no powerful

4.2 Possible Solutions
4.2.1 Utilize Information and Resources More Effectively
      The company and some other small and medium enterprises are lack of capital.
However, the relevant government departments have taken measures to help them.
Companies should make active attitude towards it, using information and resources
provided by the Government. Second, establishing advanced management concept, the
management should keep pace with the international market standards. It’ll be
sustained and healthy development in this way.
4.2.2 Build Self-brand & Develop Outstanding Corporate Culture
      Third, the corporate brand is very beneficial to the company's own development
from the long-term interests. When negotiate with clients, salesmen can use company’s
brand. With superior quality and good service, it will gradually establish confidence for
the brand by clients. In addition, both the company’s own workshop and other factories,
they should ensure high quality of pet products. Give specific provisions to quality
standards. The company can’t allow poor quality products flow to the market.
      Besides, corporate culture plays a crucial impact on companies’ development. It
contains a lot of culture. For example, values, operating norms, management style,
entrepreneurship, ethics and development goals. We must strengthen the construction

      Pet products in recent years develop very rapidly. Growing demand for pet
products industry is very promising in the domestic and international market
developments. Although the financial crisis hit the pet industry in the past two years,
China's national economy is developed rapidly and the international financial crisis has
gradually subsided, our pet industry are going to get a new development opportunity.
      At the same time, pet industry in China is facing new challenges as new entrants
in the business circles in 2010. Raw material prices continued to rise, which result in
lower industry profits. So our pet industry is experiencing increasingly fierce market
competition. Faced with this situation, pet industry enterprises should take actively
actions and pay attention to invention and innovation.
      Meanwhile it should continuously improve their production technology.
Meanwhile it should catch comprehensive business operation of the market trend. To
understand the national policies and regulations, so that enterprises can adapt to
international environment. The right strategies enable enterprises to compete in tough
market and gain a leading edge.
      Pet industry report said production of pet accessories usual can get 10% -30%
after-tax profits, and high-tech products could gain 50% or more profits. For example,

      China’s economy, science, culture have drastically changed under the complex
international environment. China's current pet products industry is still in its infancy,
but its potential is tremendous because of many favorable policies of China’s
government. Pet supplies industry has a history of several hundred years. China grows
so fast that it has become one of the leading exporters of pet products.
      However, a number of problems are found in the small and medium sized
foreign trade companies such as lack of funds, poor management, low brand awareness
etc. Domestic enterprises must utilize information and resources more effectively.
Meanwhile they should build a simulating corporate culture. To help establish Chinese
brand and promote the recognition of Chinese brand in the overseas market, Chinese
government should enact relevant laws and regulations to regulate pet industry and in
turn to boost the development of the industry.
      Besides, small and medium sized foreign trade companies should strictly follow
the management principle “customer first, quality first”. Only in this way will China's
pet industry move to a new stage when pet supplies industry becomes one of the leading
industries generating strong economic growth in China. Made-in-China will release its
extraordinary glamour in the global market.
