FAI Signal and Timing System

FAI Timing System

Introduction The FAI Timing system is designed to automate the official timing tasks for
FAI soaring events. This automation simplifies the work of officials and
reduces the level on knowledge about specific rules. In the F3b distance task,
it actually eliminates the need for two officials at base A.

Timing System The timing system is built using a collection of microcontrollers and wires to
Design pushbuttons for the officials. Multiple microcontrollers are used to simplify
the programming and minimize any timing delays caused by extra code. One
master controller managed working time, prep time, and the display.
Additional controllers are used for individual pilot buzzers and lap counters.

Timing System The largest delay in the system is managing buttons for buzzers. The button
Delays presses must be “debounced” because a switch will fluctuate on and off
several times when the button is pressed. This debounce time is 5
milliseconds. To provide good signal levels, a higher, 12 volt level is used to
all the remote buttons providing reliable operation even over 150 meters of
                wire.

System Components

System The following components are included in the timing system. No all
Components components need to be used. Pilots are signaled by lights, buzzers, and audio
recordings. Any one or several of them might be left out.

                      Part Function
Timer Box Contains electronics for timing, display, and recorded
                                    sounds.
Relay Box Contains relays for turning on lights and buzzers.
Light Box Contains lights for signaling pilots. Relay box may be
mounted inside the light box. A separate power
connector and fuse is used for the lights. The lights
might draw 15-20 amps if multiple lights are on.
Base A Buttons Button box with two buttons. One on the side for
signaling laps and one on the top for launches/restarts.
Base B Buttons Button box with one button. The button on the side is
                                    used for signaling laps.
Base B Junction Junction box to connect the Base A to Base B 8
Box conductor cable to the Base B button cables.
Base A and Base Cables with four pin connectors for connecting Base A
B cables Buttons to the Timer Box and Base B Buttons to the
                                    Base B Junction Box.
Buzzers Buzzers that plug into the Relay Box. Buzzers are
12Volt and you have to plug them in with the correct
polarity. Buzzers are powered using the same power as
                                    the relay box.
Audio amplifier A 12 Volt automobile system can be used or a PA
and speakers system could be used. The output from the Timer Box is
                                    low level audio.

                     Mode Function
Buzzer Provide Base A and Base B buzzers. Buzzers/lights are
turned on whenever the Base A or Base B buttons are
pushed. This is the default operating mode.
F3b – Duration Master clock implements the prep time, and working
time for duration. Pilot flight time is not implemented.
F3b – Distance Master clock implements the prep time, and working
time for speed. Pilot clock/timers are used for tracking
the four minute course time and counting laps.
F3b – Speed Master clock implements the prep time, and working
time for speed. Pilot clock/timers are used for timing the
flight. Pilot timing also includes the one minute from
launch timer for entering the course.
F3j Implements the master clock for a F3j round. This
includes the prep time, task time, warning buzzer, and
overtime timing for the window. It does not support
timing individual times for each pilot.
F3f Implements the master clock for a F3f flight. Pilot timing
                                   counts all the laps.
F5b Implements F5b flight timing including laps, duration,
                                   and motor run time.

Buzzer Mode

Purpose Provide a simple set of buzzers, with or without a timed window. Buzzer
mode can be used whenever you need a Base A and Base B buzzer and the
task is not one of the pre-programmed tasks in the system.

Operation of Buzzers/Lights will turn on whenever the turn button at Base A or Base B is
Buzzers pressed. Order is not important.

Display The prep time and working time can be set in Buzzer mode. The prep time
and working time are displayed on the first line of the LCD display in count-
                down format.

F3b Speed Task

Purpose Provide timing for the F3b speed task.

Prep Time The duration of the prep time can be adjusted to reduce the amount of prep
Options time for a pilot. Startup of the next pilots prep time can also be automated to
                keep the contest running.

                   Prep Description
Manual Prep time must be manually started. Press the ENTER key to
                             start prep time.
Work Prep time for the next pilot is started when working time is
started. This reduces the time between pilots, speeding up the
                             contest.
End Start prep time when previous working time ends.
