The response of orthodox state-monopoly-capitalism theory to European
integration was to see it as a further phase in the fusion of capital and the
state. Since 1980, two other approaches to the analysis of global capitalism
and European integration have also emerged within the Marxist tradition, and
in close interaction with the approach outlined above: that of the Amsterdam
School and the neo- Gramscian tendency in international political economy.
