their fifth straight game in a row on Saturday Jan. 17
in Behnken Field House with 83-56 as the final score.
The Lady Griffins dominated the game. Teamwork,
dedication and pride are a few words that come to mind
when these women take the court, and no one is more
proud than Coach JD Gustin.
During warm ups’ it was clear that the women meant
business. They moved effortlessly through each warm up
and gave each other encouragement. The women also
showed great sportsmanship as they were announced,
they ran over and shook the hand of the opponents and
their coaches and the game was underway.
As Behnken Field House slowly filled up across the
court ‘The Nest’ formed and began to cheer the women
on. The Nest is a group of students that come to every
home game to have a great time and give support.
“One game at a time, and enjoy every practice and
every game that we play” is what Gustin said when
asked what the secret to their success was. Gustin has
been with the team for five seasons and is pleased with
the teams progress.
The team has four captains this year Mara Hoskins
#4, Shannon Evans #11, Alexis Tucker #14, Elisa
Leader #30. There is plenty of talent and experience
on the team. Shannon, Alexis, and Elisa are All
Conference players. All four women are excited about
the team’s national ranking.

being ranked among one of the top teams in the nation
not only shows the skills and talent each player has on
our team but it also shows us how well we have grown
and accomplished as a team this season.” Hoskins said
in an e-mail interview.
Also in an e-mail interview Tucker said “It is bitter-
sweet. It is fun to be ranked, but I also feel that we
should be ranked higher. We are a very good basketball
team, and we lost some games that we shouldn’t have.
I am glad we are ranked, but I do think it should be
higher, and by the end of the year I think we will be.”
Gustin said, “Last season the girls ended their season
ranked 18 and have remained in the top 25 for the last
three years.”
The day after the game, Gustin was pleased with the
way the season was progressing. He said “The girls are
having a pretty good year, lost a couple in the preseason
but all and all doing really well.”
With the season moving right along, it is amazing
how the girls balance school with basketball. Leader
