Electives:
Three additional courses offered by the School of Computing
and Information Sciences (to bring to 30 credits), including
any above course or TCN-prefix course not otherwise used to
satisfy a focus. The list of acceptable courses is maintained
by the School.
                                            Rationale

        The revised program is based on the following recommendations and suggestions made
last year by an external reviewer:

   1. Make curriculum content changes to modernize the program. Any modern program in
      telecommunications and networking needs to include a strong emphasis in mobile
      Internet concepts and technologies, as well as the more traditional aspects of
      telecommunications. Further, the program should include telecommunications policy and
      legal concepts.
   2. Make changes to curriculum constraints in order to provide students with the courses they
      need. In concert with content changes, change the MSTN course requirements so that
      SCIS can staff the curriculum that is being offered – students will suffer by adherence to
      a curriculum that was formulated by faculty that are no longer with the program. Further,
      the constraints should be clarified (specifically, the “unofficial” Track constraints).
   3. The program should tilt further towards wireless and mobile telecommunications and
      networking, across the range of the curriculum in the technology, engineering, software,
      management, and policy areas.


This proposal specifies five required graduate courses, including a graduate level networking
course, a policy course, a wireless communications course, and a security course. These courses
also better align with current faculty interests and have been offered regularly. Additionally, we
provide students with significant flexibility by enabling the students to choose one focus area of
their interest from any of the five focus areas (with one area offered in ECE) and then to take any
three other electives. These options better align with the wide range of students who have
recently enrolled in the program. The focus groups also include areas such as wireless, software
management, and policy that were highlighted in the program review. Finally, the proposal
removes the track options, and more clearly specifies all program requirements, including the
thesis option.
