 1.0       GENERAL INFORMATION


     1.1   Introduction

            SNC LAVALIN has awarded to KETTANEH Construction Saudi Arabia Ltd. the
            subcontract for the construction of KING ABDULLAH FINANCIAL DISTRICT,
            RIYADH, K.S.A.


       1.2 Purpose

            To provide a procedure for welding to be performed throughout the project to ensure
            conformity with project specifications and approved drawings.


       1.3 Scope of Work

            This method statement outlined the procedure for welding of Chilled Water & Fire
            Water piping systems in the KAFD in accordance with project specifications and
            approved drawings.


       1.4 Location

            Welding works for Fire Water & Chilled Water piping system shall be performed as
            specified in the approved drawings for the KAFD, Riyadh KSA.

 2.0      EXECUTION


       2.1 Materials

           a. Carbon Steel Pipes & Fittings
           b. Welding Electrodes.


       2.2 Tools and Equipments

           a.     Welding Machine

       2.3 Procedure of Work

          2.3.1   Welders

                 Welding works for chilled water & fire water piping shall be done only by welders
                  with valid welding certificates.
                 All welders shall be required to pass the Welder’s Qualification Test by an
                  approved independent testing firm.

          2.3.2   Welding Preparation

                 Prior to start of welding works, survey the job site for potential hazards and shall
                  be cleared before starting the work.
                 All equipments, tools & welding accessories shall be in good working condition.
                 Scaffolding shall be used for all elevated welding works.
                 All safety requirements shall be at the job site.
                 Proper ventilation shall be maintained (where required) for fresh air circulation.

         2.3.3    Piping Fabrication & Welding

                 Materials should be traceable provided with material mill certificate
                 All piping materials shall be placed off the ground on temporary stand or wooden
                  blocks during fabrication & storage.
                 All pipes shall be cut accurately to measurements as specified in the approved
                  drawings.
                 Pipe shall be cut square and shall be bevelled according to the approved welding
                  procedure.
                 Edge preparation shall be done by grinding machine.
                 Welding shall be done on the ground or in the final location of the joint depending
                  on the actual site condition.
                 All welding works shall be conducted in accordance with ASME-IX.
                 Welding of carbon steel pipes and fittings for chilled water piping shall be in
                  accordance with the approved Welding Procedure Specification (WPS).
                 Welding electrodes shall be free from defects, cracks, dirt and deterioration.
                 Welding electrodes shall be thoroughly dried by use of portable welding ovens.
                 Welding works shall not be done when wind velocity exceeds 3 M/s except where
                  protective facilities are provided.
                 Welding Machine current rating adjustments shall be done whenever required.
                 The welding cable, welding holder and ground cable of the welding equipment
                  shall be securely attached.
                 Use only the welding electrode specified in the Welding Procedure Specification.
                 Only qualified welders can do the tack welding.
                 Welding electrodes to be used for tack welding shall be of the same type as used
                  for the actual welding.
                 Tack welds that are to be incorporated into the final weld shall be thoroughly
                  cleaned, prepared at each end, and inspected for cracks. Any cracked tacks shall
                  be removed before welding the joint.
                 Proper welding speed shall be maintained as specified in the Welding Procedure
                  Specification.
                 Cleaning in between welding pass such as grinding and brushing shall be in
                  accordance with Welding Procedure Specification.

       2.4       Responsibilities

                    Site Engineer shall organize, manage and supervise all activities related to welding
                     works with regards to safety, quality and productivity of the over-all performance of
                     the work.
                    Site Supervisor and Foreman shall arrange all the necessary manpower, tools and
                     equipments and implement the approved working procedure for a proper execution of
                     the work with regards to safety, quality and productivity.


 3.0         QA / QC

       3.1 Responsibilities

                    QA / QC Inspector shall make sure that all activities related to the welding works are
                     carried out in accordance with the project specification and approved drawings. He
                     shall arrange Inspection & Testing required with SNC-LAVALIN in accordance with
                     the QA/QC Plan. He shall maintain and keep records for all QC Documents.
                    Site Engineer, Supervisor and Foreman shall assist the QA/QC Inspector whatever he
                     required in relation to the quality of works, procedures or documents.


       3.2 Test and Measurement

                    Pressure Gauge for Hydro test of Welding Joints.
                    Visual Inspection on Welding Joints.

       3.3 Inspection

                     Request for Inspection shall be issued to KAFD Project Inspection 24 hours in
                      advance on weekdays and 48 hours in advance for weekends and holidays.
                     Inspection shall be done in accordance with the QA / QC Plan.
                     During Inspection, all welding joints shall be carefully examined for leakage.
                     The welding joints being tested shall be satisfactory if there is no evidence of
                      leakage or reasonable drop in pressure after the specified test period.
                     Leaking welding joints shall be repaired and test shall be repeated until the joints
                      have no leakage and proven satisfactory.

 4.0        SAFETY


       4.1 Guidelines

               Person working with welding works shall wear the Personal Protective Equipments
                at all times on the job site.
               Warning sign boards and barricades shall be provided where necessary to isolate the
                working area and prevent un-authorized personnel.
               All equipments shall be tagged and checked before using.
               Aside from PPE, additional safety welding requirements shall be provided where
                necessary such as fire extinguishers, fire blankets, welding apron, welding gloves
                and welding mask.
               Scaffolding shall be tagged and approved by safety personnel before using.
               Housekeeping shall be done before and after working to maintain cleanliness in the
                area.



       4.2 Responsibilities

               Safety Inspector / Officer in conjunction with the site supervisor or foreman shall
                physically check that all safety requirements has been provided and implemented.
               Welders shall wear the proper welding safety equipments at all times.
