                                 Church Membership – Session 2

Introduction & Recap on Session 1
              – Why have church membership?
                    • God’s plan to achieve His purpose is through the church by His
Holy Spirit (E.g. “more saved than unsaved in Bradford.”)
              – Why have church membership now?
                    • The timing is right (our focus on Growth)
                    • Need to be ‘counter cultural,’ (commitment, serving others, salt
                      & light)
              – Church membership is biblical
                    • Automatically a part of the Universal Church if Born Again
                    • Local church: The Bible never envisages Christians existing
                      alone.
              – Why NOT have Church membership? ‘Spirit of the age’
              – For most of us Membership will not be a big adjustment!

        BFC Membership & Process
Process for becoming a member of BFC:
        • The 7 areas above would be outlined and explained in 6
teaching sessions. The process for those expressing a
desire to become, or find out about becoming, a member of
          BFC is:
                - Attend the six sessions
                - Have an ‘interview’ with an elder(s) and a member of the LT or
WLT. (This also provides a chance for the individual (or couple) to
ask questions and get to know part of the leadership better).
                - Individual decides if they want to become a member of BFC and the
BFC leadership decide if they are in agreement.
                - Welcome them publicly into the BFC church family.
        • NB Transition arrangements for people who already feel a
          part of BFC.

Those people who are born again are:

        • New Creations.
                – 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV)
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone,
                    the new has come!
        • Of a different Kingdom with a different King.
                – Colossians 1:13 through Colossians 1:15 (NIV)
For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us
into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the
                    forgiveness of sins.
        • Sons of the King.
                – Galatians 3:26 through Galatians 3:28 (NIV)
You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who
were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is
neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all
                    one in Christ Jesus.
        • No longer their own but bought with a price.
                – 1 Corinthians 6:19 through 1 Corinthians 6:20 (NIV)
Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in
you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were
bought at a price. Therefore honour God with your body.

                                 Church Membership – Session 2

The three points I’m looking at are all to do with:

        • Community.
                – so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member
                  belongs to all the others.

        • Relationship.
                – Galatians 6:10 (NIV)
Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people,
especially to those who belong to the family of believers.
        • Mutual Accountability.
                – One another
        • Mutual Responsibility.
                – We ARE our brothers keeper

                5. Prepared to come under the spiritual authority of the leaders who must give
an account to God (Heb 13v17)

13v17 Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over
you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will
be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you. (NIV)
13v17 Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your
souls as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not
with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you. (NASB)

13v17 Be responsive to your pastoral leaders. Listen to their counsel. They
are alert to the condition of your lives and work under the strict
supervision of God. Contribute to the joy of their leadership, not its
drudgery. Why would you want to make things harder for them? (The
                   Message)

give an account to God (Heb 13v17)

        A. Eldership/Leadership accountability
The elders (and leaders) are accountable in the following ways:
        1. Before God/Scripture.
        2. Before other members of BFC: (2-way)
                a) within the eldership (we believe in the plurality of elders)
                b) within the BFC Leadership Team
                c) within the BFC Wider Leadership Team
                d) within Trustees (financial accountability)
                e) with BFC members (e.g. behaving contrary to Scripture)
        3. External
                a) Newfrontiers (Tony Smith)
                b) Spiritual leadership in Bradford e.g. Prayer For Bradford. (Howard Astin)

        5. Prepared to come under the spiritual authority of the leaders who must give an
            account to God (Heb 13v17)

        B. Spiritual authority
        1. The elders (and leaders) have been entrusted with an authority from God to
serve as elders/shepherds/overseers and deacons: 1 Thess 4v2 (For you know
what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus).
        2. This authority is for building up, not tearing down (2 Cor 10v8,13v10)
        3. These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all
authority. Do not let anyone despise you. (Titus 2v15)
        4. The elders & leaders will have to give an account to God re: how they’ve used
            their God-given authority (Heb 13v17)
        5. True spiritual authority is never: harsh, manipulative, dictatorial or controlling
but Godly. (1 Pet 5v1-3 To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder, a
witness of Christ’s sufferings and one who also will share in the glory to be
revealed: Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as
overseers—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants
you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve; not lording it over those
entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.)

      - I don’t want to become a member of - Individuals who explicitly don’t want to
BFC, what church related activities become members of BFC can come
can I be involved in? on a Sunday and to special events, but
not to homegroup or church family
meetings. The number of areas that
the person could serve in would also
                                                            be limited.
      - Can I be a member of BFC & another - In principle yes. However, this would be
church? rare and issues of eldership
                                                            accountability and spiritual authority
would have to be explored with those
                                                            concerned.
      - I’ve been baptised as a baby, do I still - Yes! Although as much time as
need to be baptised? necessary would be taken to explain
                                                            this from Scripture.

                       Questions Answers
      - At what age can I become a member of - Like with the desire to be baptised in
BFC? water, the issue is about the person’s
                                                           understanding and agreement. There
is no upper or lower limit, but wisdom
                                                           is required.
      - I know and agree with all that’s in the - No! It is envisaged that as we transition
teaching sessions, do I have to go to a BFC membership many folk will
through all 6 sessions? only need to have an ‘interview’ with
                                                          the elder(s) & LT/WLT member.
      - What happens if someone wants to - The elders have the final say as those
become a member of BFC and the who must give an account before God.
elders aren’t in agreement? Clear & biblical reasons why would
                                                           be given to the individual?

BFC’s Statement of Beliefs as specified in the Declaration of Trust
          document with the Charity’s Commission
        We believe in...
        • The one true God who lives eternally in three persons—the Father, the
          Son and the Holy Spirit.
        • The love, grace and sovereignty of God in creating, sustaining, ruling,
          redeeming and judging the world.
        • The divine inspiration and supreme authority of the Old and New
Testament Scriptures, which are the written Word of God—fully
          trustworthy for faith and conduct.
        • The dignity of all people, made male and female in God's image to
love, be holy and care for creation, yet corrupted by sin, which incurs
          divine wrath and judgment.
        • The incarnation of God’s eternal Son, the Lord Jesus Christ—born of
the virgin Mary; truly divine and truly human, yet without sin.
        • The atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross: dying in our place,
paying the price of sin and defeating evil, so reconciling us with God.

BFC’s Statement of Beliefs as specified in the Declaration of Trust
document with the Charity’s Commission (Con’d)
        We believe in...
        • The bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ, the first fruits of our
resurrection; his ascension to the Father, and his reign and mediation
as the only Saviour of the world.
        • The justification of sinners solely by the grace of God through faith in
          Jesus Christ.
        • The ministry of God the Holy Spirit, who leads us to repentance, unites
us with Christ through new birth, empowers our discipleship and
          enables our witness.
        • The Church, the body of Christ both local and universal, the priesthood
of all believers—given life by the Spirit and endowed with the Spirit's
gifts to worship God and proclaim the gospel, promoting justice and
          love.
        • The personal and visible return of Jesus Christ to fulfil the purposes of
God, who will raise all people to judgement, bring eternal life to the
redeemed and eternal condemnation to the lost, and establish a new
          heaven and new earth.

        Conclusion
        • With immediate effect BFC has members as defined by the
          7 sessions.
        • You become a member, i.e., you choose to opt in
        • During this transition period the LT/WLT will try to
exercise great grace, love and forbearance.
        • As born again believers we are automatically a part of
          God’s great Church.
        • The Bible teaches that we all need to be part of a local
church so we can ‘work out’ our salvation and achieve
          God’s purposes.
        • For many people here, it does not require a big change.
