                                  Introduction

Congratulations. You are the Coaching Convenor for your Club!

The role of Coaching Convenor is crucial to the success of all coaching programs.

As Coaching Convenor for Eastwood Ryde I hope to be the person who introduces
all coaches to the joys and challenges of coaching at Club level. The aim is to have
all coaches working together towards attaining coaching accreditation and
updating their skill level by providing coach education and mentoring opportunities.

We have very highly accredited coaches at ERNA who not only coach our elite
players at Representative level but can be found down on the courts at
Meadowbank or Brush Farm on Saturdays coaching club teams. These coaches
are also available to help with the programs we are offering whether they are
beginner coaching clinics, workshops or Accredited Coaching Courses.

This manual is designed to serve as a guide for Club Convenors and explains what
resources are available to assist with the training and encouragement of all
coaches.

“Start where you are. Use what you have.
                           Do what you can”

      Member Protection Information for Coaches
Coaches play an important and influential role not only in the sporting lives of the athletes they
coach but also in their everyday lives. Coaches are teachers, planners, motivators, advisers,
friends and mentors to the athletes they coach. It is important that coaches understand their
roles, responsibilities and position and that they comply with all relevant policies. Within Australia
there are many useful websites and resources from government and non-government bodies
that you as the Coaching Convenor can access.

Netball NSW Policies
Netball NSW have a number of policies in relation to member protection to ensure that all
participants in the sport have a fair and enjoyable experience. These policies include child
protection, pregnancy, codes of behaviour, complaint handling, and anti-discrimination and
harassment. All Netball NSW policies can be downloaded from the Netball NSW website and are
located under the policies and forms tab.
                                          www.netballnsw.com

Netball Australia
The Netball Australia Junior Policy is a resource which all coaches should read as it outlines and
provides a framework to those with a duty of care to young netballers. The policy applies to
junior Netballers aged 5 to 17 years and emphasises risk management, duty of care, physical
growth and Netball pathways. A copy of the Netball Australia Junior Netball Policy can be
downloaded from the Netball Australia website.
                                           www.netball.asn.au

Play by the Rules
Play by the Rules is a government initiative to assist sporting Associations and clubs to develop a
harassment-free environment for all involved. The Play by the Rules website and resources outline ways to
prevent child abuse, discrimination, harassment and victimisation, and information on inclusive coaching,
team selection and photographing children. The website has free courses/workshops for coaches to
complete (these courses go towards gaining reaccreditation points0 and lists other informative websites.
                                         www.playbytherules.net.au

Background Checks
Coaches, whether in a paid or voluntary capacity, and who have direct and/or unsupervised contact with
people under the age of 18 years are required to undergo a screening process. All relevant forms,
requirements and policies can be found in Part B – Child Protection Policy of the Netball NSW Member
Protection Policy. Coaching Convenors should acquaint themselves with this important information.

National Coaching Accreditation Scheme
Coaching pathway for netball

The new framework aims to assist coaches to successfully move through the Coach
Education Framework.

The major change to the coaching framework is that it will be a six-tier progression, rather
than the current three-tier, with each stage being accredited. The names of each of the
courses have also changed to reflect the level of skill required at each stage of the player
and coach pathway.

Course content has evolved to reflect our changing community. Some of the changes were
required due to the need for coaches to be more mindful of inclusive coaching practices,
risk management, child protection, member protection and immediate first aid. Other
changes were made to bridge the gap between courses.
