OUSD CST HIGHLIGHTS
Overall, OUSD showed modest gains in moving students to Proficient or Advanced levels, and
reducing the percentage in Below Basic and Far Below Basic performance on the California
Standards Test/California Modified Assessment for 2012. OUSD continues to move in a positive
direction.
o 1.3% gain in Proficient/Advanced on the CST English Language Arts, grades 2-11 (from
43% to 44%)
o 1.8% gain in Proficient/Advanced on the CST Science, grades 5, 8, and high school (from
34% to 36%)
Students with Disabilities continued to gain across-the-board. This year’s results:
o 3.1% gain in Proficient/Advanced on the CST English Language Arts, grades 2-11 (from
21% to 24%)
o 2.0% gain in Proficient/Advanced on the CST Math, grades 2-11 (from 23% to 25%)
o 2.0 gain in Proficient/Advanced on the CST Science, grades 5, 8, and high school (from
19% to 21%)
o The bigger story is that over the past five years, Students with Disabilities have moved
from 8% Proficient or Advanced in English Language Arts to 24% Proficient or Advanced.

SUBJECT AREA HIGHLIGHTS
Science
We have focused over the past year on increasing the time spent on Elementary Science, and
have seen growth in Science proficiency.
o Elementary Science (Grade 5) increased Proficient/Advanced by 2.9% from 45% to 47%
o Elementary Science: 38 out of 58 elementary schools made positive gains, with an
average increase of 10.2% for these schools. 17 schools posted strong double-digit
gains.
Largest gain (36%) at Sequoia Elementary, from 32% in 2010-11 to 68%
Proficient or Advanced in 2011-12.
Lincoln Elementary, 96% of Grade 5 students scored Proficient or Advanced in
Science.
Esperanza Elementary, a school with 71% English Learners, reached a new high
of 64% Proficient or Advanced on CST Science
o Life Science (Grade 10) increased Proficient/Advanced by 5.1%, from 31% to 36%
English Language Arts
o Grade 7 increased Proficient/Advanced by 3.6% (from 39% to 42%)
o 12 out of 16 middle schools increased Proficient/Advanced by a range of 0.7% to 7.7%.
The average gain was 3.8%.
Elementary: Sankofa Academy increased by 12.2% (from 38% to 50% Prof/Adv)
Middle School: Elmhurst Community Prep increased by 7.5% (from 28% to 35% Prof/Adv)
High School: MetWest increased by 5.5% (from 25% to 30% Proficient/Advanced)
Oakland Tech increased by 5.1% (from 48% to 53% Proficient/Advanced)
Mathematics
Math gains were at the school level. Some highlights:
Elementary: Piedmont increased by 12.1 % (from 61% to 73% Prof/Adv)
EnCompass Academy increased by 11.9% (from 56% to 68% Prof/Adv)
High School: Coliseum College Prep increased 6.6 % (from 14% to 21%)
