									PAL – Quick Guide
PAL, Patient Access List, is an electronic patient list with associated demographic and clinical
information. It is a tool to organize the user’s workflow; it is not part of the permanent patient record
except for the forms signed via the PAL.

Timeframe Selection window
   1. Click desired shift.
   2. Click OK.
Establish Relationship window
   1. Click drop-down arrow to select relationship.
   2. Select option listed.
   3. Click OK.
Viewing the PAL
PAL is divided into 5 categories: Name, Demographics, Notification, Results and Tasks.




   Patient Name

Patient Name
     1. Double-clicking on patient name opens chart.
     2. Right-click for functions of the Patient Name category.
          MMC is not using Assigned Caregivers or Display Priority functions.
Demographic Section
Contains Room, Bed, MRN, Publicity Codes. Attending and patient care related columns such as
Allergies, Chemstrips and Activity. The user must scroll to view the entire section.
     1. Double-click to view data in patient care columns.
     2. Hovering on cell may not display all details.
     3. Complete or cancel old orders on Orders tab so that only current orders display in PAL.

Notification Section
Time frame selected by user determines data displaying in this category. For example, if an order
was entered at 1800 and clinician selects1900-0700 timeframe, the order will not display. Selected
time frame displays on Search Criteria Bar.

     1. Double-click on indicators to open associated window.
           A clipboard will display again when there are new orders.
     2. Click    to close the window.

      Leaving orders on the window (not clicking Apply) will also leave the clipboard active
      and you will not know when there are new orders.
      Orders entered by a clinician will not go to that clinician’s Notification column.
      Clicking Apply does not remove orders from the chart. Go to Orders tab to see all of the
      patient’s orders.

Results Section
Displays Precautions, Isolation, and other results independent of the timeframe.
   1. Hover over cell to display date of the result value.
            Hovering may not display all data in some columns.
   2. Right-click on cell to open Result Details window.
   3. Select View Details.

Tasks Section
Tasks section is a work list of nursing interventions for each patient. Tasks are displayed for selected
time frame only. Tasks can be listed on the PAL for 2 different nursing positions. For example, daily
weight task may be listed and completed by either the nurse or nursing assistant.

Task columns: Overdue, PRN/Continous, and hourly time columns
   1. Double click cell (indicators) to open list of tasks.

  Task Window

          Quick Chart button is used only after a Downtime for back charting Meds.
          Chart button is used to complete all checked tasks. Chart button opens forms for charting.
           Tasks will drop off Tasks window when forms are signed.
          Click     to close window without completing tasks.
          Right-click on task to complete only that task.

To complete an individual task:
     1. Right-click on task to be completed.
     2. Select function.
   Charting Functions
         Chart Done: removes task from the list without charting on the form; used for tasks that
         have already been completed through Ad Hoc Charting.
          Chart Not Done: for med tasks. The same as Not given.
          Chart Details: opens form for charting and removes task from PAL.
   Additonal Functions
        Ad Hoc Charting: opens Ad Hoc Charting window. Charting via Ad Hoc Charting does not
        complete task in PAL.
          Reschedule Task: to change due time; useful for rescheduling task to a different shift.
          Reason for rescheduling does not need to be entered.
          Create Admin Note: tool to communicate patient preferences; not part of the permanent
          record. Once the task is completed, the note will not be available.
          Order Info and Task Info: display history and status.

Setting Timeframe Default
Clinicians may set a default so that Timeframe Selection window does not open with each logon.
        1. Click Options button on Menu Bar.
        2. Click Set Defaults and complete Timeframe selection window.

Patient List
To change the patient list or create a list 1st time PAL is opened.
      1. Right-click Search Criteria Bar.

       2. Click Change Patient List.
       3. Select desired list.
       4. Click OK.
Creating Lists in PAL
New PowerChart users may need to create location and custom lists in PAL.
To create a list in PAL, use the same procedure as creating a list on Patient List tab.
      1. Click New.
      2. Select type of list.
      3. Select Next.
 For a location list:
      1. Click + to open Munson Medical Center folder.
      2. Click Munson Medical Center.
      3. Scroll to find desired unit.
      4. Select unit.
      5. Click Finish.
 Custom lists require a name.
     1. Enter name of your choice.
     2. Click Finish.
