MEMORANDUM FOR SAIs, AIs and Raider Challenge Commanders

Subject: 5th Annual Golden Valley “Raider Challenge”, 14-15 Sep 2012


1. Purpose. The purpose of this letter is to publish the events, guidance and sequence of events for the
5th Annual Golden Valley Raider Challenge hosted by the CHS JROTC Cardinal Battalion. This event
will be held on Saturday the 15th of Sep 2012 at Clinton High School and National Guard Armory in
Clinton MO. The 7 events included in the Golden Valley Raider Challenge will be:

        a. 50 Meter Truck Tire Flip and 2 Mile Run (in lieu of APFT). (High School)

        b. One-Rope Bridge (Artesian Park and USCE areas)

        c. Obstacle Course (Artesian Park and USCE areas)

        d. 10-K Road March with 1-35 pound Ruck (Artesian Park and USCE areas)

       e. Raider Challenge Course (consists of 8 events):
                (1) Rope Traverse (New and Improved)
                (2) 20 Foot Long Horizontal Ladder (Carrying no equipment)
                (3) Low Crawl
                (4) Knot Tying, 8 stations 2 per cadet on rope corral. FM 3-97.61 Chapter 4,
Section III, paragraphs 4-7 through 4-32. A cadet will draw any two knots at random.
                (5) Military Vehicle Pull
                (6) The Concrete Block Move/Post Carry
                (7) 25ft Rope Climb

        f. Rope Management and Knots FM 3-97.61 Chapter 4, Sections I and II, paragraphs 4-1
through 4-5. Multiple Choice Test and Practical Application Test.

        g. Triathlon

        h. The tie breakers for any and all events are the best times on events as follows:

                (1) 50 Meter Truck Tire Flip and 2 Mile Run

    a. Sequence of Events.

    b. Administrative Notes.

        (1) CHS JROTC Representative will be at Clinton High School to register teams between 1800
hrs and 2200 hrs, Fri, 14 Sep 12 and 0500 hrs, Sat 15 Sep 12 until just prior to the Commanders’ Call.

       (2) Instructors Responsibility. Must bring Covenant Not to Sue, Medical Release Form &
Statement of Health for each cadet participating.

         (3) Team Size. Raider Teams consist of eight (8) team members and one (1) alternate. Schools
may enter up to as many teams for competition. In the case where a team does not complete an event with
all 8 team members that started the event the team will forfeit that event. The event time scores will not
be computed for the overall team scores and the team will receive a last place finish for that event.

        (4) Safety: Safety precautions are required at all times during the competition. Team Advisors
are requested to enforce safety rules and use general caution at all times. Please report any accidents and
incidents to the Raider Operations Center (ROC), in case emergency medical assistance is needed. IAW
routine JROTC procedures, schools must submit a "Convent Not to Sue Form", for each of their
participating cadets. Clinton High School and the Clinton National Guard will not be held responsible for
accidents or injuries. Team advisors MUST bring all release forms, properly completed, and turned into
the ROC prior to the competition. There are NO exceptions to this liability waiver issue.

c. Uniform/Equipment:

        (1) Instructors : BDU/ACU

        (2) Raider Challenge Team Members.

           (a) Uniform for all events (with the exception of (b) below) in this Raider Challenge is
complete BDU/ACU uniform and Pistol Belt w/1 quart canteen and cover attached to belt / or / Pistol
Belt and Camel Back.

              (b) For the Tire Flip and Two-Mile Run, cadets will wear brown/tan undershirt or team t-
shirts, belt, BDU/ACU trousers and athletic shoes.

        (3) Chaperones. Civilian clothes.

        (4) Raider Team Equipment. Present at all events

            (a)   1 Each Compass.
            (b)   1 Each Rucksack.
            (c)   1 each 150 ft Rappelling Rope (carried in the rucksack)
            (d)   8 ropes for Swiss Seats
            (e)   11 Caribiners
            (f)   8 Pair of Leather Gloves (optional)
            (g)   First Aid Kit

    d. Logistics.

        (1) Check-in will be at Clinton High. (Strip Map enclosed).

        (2) Showers will be available for teams wishing to arrive the night before. There are separate
bays for males and females. Each school is responsible for cots/sleeping mats.

        (3) The Clinton High School JROTC will provide breakfast for competing team members and
coaches on Sat 15 Sep 12. Breakfast will also be available to parents and supporters for a small donation.
CHS JROTC will provide lunch for competing team members and coaches for the noon meal on Sat 15
Sep 12. Additional sack lunches will be available for advance purchase at $2.00 each. Please provide
numbers no later one week prior to the meet.

    (4) The CHS JROTC will have snacks available for purchase on Friday evening and a concession
available throughout the day on Saturday.

    Overall Team Trophy: 1st through 3rd Place

    Rope Management and Knots Test: Rope Management and Knots FM 3-97.61 Chapter 4,
Sections I and II, paragraphs 4-1 through 4-5: 1st Place Overall

   Triathlon: Medals for top three triathlete teams.

   A medal will be awarded to each member on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place overall teams.

   Scoring will be placed on team finish with lowest overall points being the winner.

   All cadets participating will receive a participation certificate.

4. Entry Requirements. A basic entry fee per 9 member team will be $100.00. Fees must be paid in full
during in processing. Please make checks payable to "CHS JROTC". Entry fee must be submitted with
the Registration Form at Enclosure # 6.

5. Our number one priority is safety. We are also committed to have fun and share camaraderie in a safe
environment. Anytime we can get JROTC Cadets together is a great training day.

                    GOLDEN VALLEY RAIDER CHALLENGE

EVENT: 50 Meter Truck Tire Flip and 2 Mile Run                                      ENCL#1

TASK: 8 Team Members will participate in this event. This is team scored event.

CONDITIONS:

   1. Uniform:

       a. Brown/tan undershirt or team T-Shirt.

       b. BDU/ACU Trousers

       c. BDU Belt or Riggers Belt.

       d. Running shoes with socks.

   2. Scored Tasks:

       a. Tire Flip in lane.

       b. 2 Mile Run

STANDARDS:

   1. Winning teams will be determined by using the team’s total time.

    2. On the command “Start” all 8 members will individually flip their tire 25 meters in their
own lane, turn around and return to the start point, and upon completion move to the start point
of the two mile run, waiting for the rest of their team, and then begin the run together. All team
members will start at the same time and must finish within 10 meters of each other, with the
clock stopping when the last team member crosses the finish line.

    3. In the event one or more teams have the same total time, the tie breaker system will take
effect.

   4. Team trophies will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places.

                   GOLDEN VALLEY RAIDER CHALLENGE


EVENT: One Rope Bridge                                                             ENCL#2


TASK: The team must properly construct a one-rope bridge using the proper knots and
equipment and move all team members and equipment across the bridge and then deconstruct the
bridge. This is a timed event.

CONDITIONS:

   1. No loops, bights and or pre-tied knots will be allowed on the rope. The rope will be
      inspected for safety after being layed out. Check your ropes! (Inspection Criteria FM
      3-97.61)

   2. Swiss seats and Aussie seats will be tied prior to reporting to the rope bridge site.
      All participants crossing the bridge will wear a rappel seat (swiss seat). The first and last
      team members may wear an Aussie seat properly tied around the waist secured with
      square knot and tied off with an overhand knot on each side of the square knot or swiss
      seat. Seats will be pre-tied in order to save time. Seats will not be graded, only inspected
      for safety.

   3. Upon arrival at the Start Point, the team will be allowed to lay their rope out in position.
      There can be no knots of any kind pre-tied in the rope prior to the start of the event. This
      will cause the team to be disqualified if the team is found to have pre-tied knots on the
      command “go.” When the team is ready, the grader will then command “Get
      Set…..GO!” On the command “GO,” the clock will start and the team will immediately
      build a 1 rope bridge. Time will continue to run until:

              a. The entire team and all equipment is across the “obstacle” (to include the
   rope!)
              b. All knots are out of the rope
              c. The team commander has announced “TIME!”

   4. Knots used in the one rope bridge are:

               a. Round turns and two half hitches on near side and far side or any approved
   bridge tying method. (Reference FM 3-97.61 or SH 21-76). A quick release for          the
   second half hitch is recommended on both sides.
               b. Butterfly or wireman’s knot, or any approved transport knot can be used for
           the transport tightening system.

   5. There is no limit on the number of cadets on the rope at any time.

   6. There is no limit on the number of snap links used in the transport knot.

   7. Only 3 cadets may be used to tighten the rope. (FM 3-97.61)

   8. Equipment: In addition to the assigned uniform, the team must have:

       a.   one (1) 150 foot Rappel Rope
       b.   8 sections of rope to construct Swiss/Aussie Seats
       c.   8 pairs of Leather gloves (optional)
       d.   11 each snap links
       e.    one each rucksack


   STANDARDS:

     1. The team constructing a one-rope bridge, moving across the bridge, and removing the
bridge in the fastest time, including penalties, will be the winner. Trophies will be presented for
1st, 2nd, and 3rd places.

   2. PENALTIES:

       a. A (1) minute penalty will be added for every knot improperly tied.

        b. A (1) minute penalty will be added for each member of the team who crosses the
obstacle and touches the ground, or any part of their uniform or equipment touches the ground
within the penalty area.

       c. A (1) minute penalty will be assessed for every piece of equipment that drops while
negotiating the obstacle.

       d. A (1) minute penalty for every knot remaining in the rope after the team calls time.

       e. A rope bridge that fails will not be counted or scored and will drop the team to last
place in that event.


NOTE: Each team will bring its own 150 foot rope bridge equipment and carry it
throughout the course of the challenge. Field Packs are the responsibility of each school.

                     GOLDEN VALLEY RAIDER CHALLENGE
EVENT: Obstacle Course                                                                  ENCL#3

TASK: The team must complete the Obstacle Course with all team members, all team
equipment and any assigned equipment in order not to be penalized. This is a timed event.

CONDITIONS:

    1. Uniform for this event in this Raider Challenge is complete BDU/ACU uniform and Pistol Belt
w/1 quart canteen and cover attached to belt / or / Pistol Belt and Camel Back. (water container must be
full at the beginning of the event).

    2. Each team will start from the start/finish line.

    3. Time will start on the command “GO” and stop when the last team member crosses the
start/finish line.

    4. All eight-team members must finish together within the 10 meter mark on the ground at
the finish line.

    5. The team will carry all required equipment.

STANDARDS:

   1. For each item of equipment missing at the end of the Obstacle Course, 1minute will be
added to the team’s overall time and the team must return to secure equipment.

    2. Teams must cross the finish line with all members within 10-meters of each other. Failure
to do so will result in a 20 minute penalty. Time will stop when last person crosses.

   3. All 8 members must finish the Obstacle Course . There is a 20 minute penalty added for
each team member not completing the Obstacle Course.

   4. Winners: The teams with the shortest time, including penalties, will be the winner.
Trophies will be presented for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places.

NOTE:

 Guides and water points will be placed along the route.

EVENT: 10 KILOMETER ROAD MARCH                                                          ENCL#4

TASK: The team must complete the 10K Road March with all team members in order not to be
penalized. This is a timed event.

CONDITIONS:

     1. Uniform for this event in this Raider Challenge is complete BDU/ACU uniform and Pistol Belt
w/1 quart canteen and cover attached to belt / or / Pistol Belt and Camel Back. (water container must be
full at the beginning of the event).

    2. Each team will start from the start/finish line.

    3. Time will start on the command “GO” and stop when the last team member crosses the
start/finish line.

    4. All eight-team members must finish together within the 10 meter mark on the ground at
the finish line.

    5. The team will carry all required equipment.

STANDARDS:

   1. For each item of equipment missing at the end of the 10K Road March, 1 minute will be
added to the team’s overall time and the team must return to secure equipment.

    2. Teams must cross the finish line with all members within 10-meters of each other. Failure

                      GOLDEN VALLEY RAIDER CHALLENGE

EVENT: Raider Challenge Course                                                       ENCL#5

TASK: Each team will negotiate eight different stations, while carrying assigned equipment,
throughout the course. This is a timed event.

CONDITIONS:

    1. Uniform: Uniform for this event in this Raider Challenge is complete BDU/ACU uniform and
Pistol Belt w/1 quart canteen and cover attached to belt / or / Pistol Belt and Camel Back. (water
container must be full at the beginning of the event).

   2. Equipment:

       a. Individual uniform listed in 1. above.

       b. Team.

              1. All required equipment.

              2. 1 Litter with a 100# weight.

    3. Upon the command “GO”, time will start and teams will move out on the course carrying
assigned equipment and litter with a 100# weight with them.

   4. Teams will negotiate all events.

    5. Throughout the course, teams will encounter stations where they will have to perform
skills of strength, endurance, accuracy, and knowledge. Penalty (minutes) will be added to
course run time according to performance of the team at each station. Stations will include:

        (1)    Rope Traverse (New and Improved)
        (2)    20 Foot Long Horizontal Ladder (Carrying no equipment)
        (3)    Low Crawl
        (4)    Knot Tying, 8 stations 2 per cadet on rope corral
        (5)    Military Vehicle Pull
        (6)    The Concrete Block Move
        (7)    25ft Rope Climb

     6. Time will stop when the team has completed all 8 stations and crosses the finish line with
all equipment and team members.

      over all winner.

                    GOLDEN VALLEY RAIDER CHALLENGE
EVENT: Raider Challenge Course

STATION: Rope Traverse

TASK: At this station there will be a 1 inch rope tied to a far tree. The team will tighten the
near side and cross the obstacle using any approved crossing method. (FM 3-97.61.) Each team
member will cross the rope without touching the ground inside the designated area.

CONDITIONS:

   1. Uniform:

       a. BDU/ACU complete.

       b. Pistol Belt w/Canteen full of water

STANDARDS:

   1. If a cadet touches the ground out side the safe area the cadet will have the choice to start
      over or get a 5 Minute Penalty.
   2. The litter does not need to negotiate the obstacle.

EVENT: Raider Challenge Course

STATION: Low Crawl

TASK: At this station teams negotiate a low crawl obstacle.

CONDITIONS:

   1. Uniform:

       a. BDU/ACU complete.

       b. Pistol Belt w/Canteen full of water

   2. When the team arrives the first cadet will commence low crawling under the obstacle and
move to the finish point. There is no limit to the number of cadets negotiating the obstacle at any
one time. The litter must negotiate the obstacle. The team will then proceed to the next station.

STANDARDS: If a raider destroys the obstacle, there will be a 10 minute penalty.

    2. Each team member will move to his or her station on a rope corral and correctly tie his or
her assigned knot. It will be the responsibility of the team member to correctly tie that knot.
Individual must tie his or her own knots without assistance.

STANDARDS: One Minute (1) will be added to team score for each incorrect knot and
attempts to assist others.

                    GOLDEN VALLEY RAIDER CHALLENGE

EVENT: Raider Challenge Course

STATION: Military Vehicle Pull

TASK: The team will attempt to pull a military style vehicle through a set distance.

CONDITIONS:

   1. Uniform:

       a. BDU/ACU complete.

       b. Pistol Belt w/Canteen full of water


   2. All equipment required for completion of this event will be provided at the site.


STANDARDS:

   1. Put the litter and all equipment on the back of the truck.

   2. Time will start when the Scorer gives the command “GO” and will stop when the Scorer
      gives the command “STOP”.

   3. Failure to pull the vehicle a set distance will add 5 minutes to the overall time.

   4. If a puller falls to the ground the driver will stop the vehicle for safety reasons. When the
      puller regains footing the driver will release brake to continue event.

                    GOLDEN VALLEY RAIDER CHALLENGE
EVENT: Raider Challenge Course

STATION: Concrete Block/Wood Post Move

TASK: At this station you will find 30 concrete blocks / 30 wood posts stacked on a wood
pallet. The team will carry each concrete block / post 30 yards from one (1) pallet to the other
pallet and stack them.

CONDITIONS:

   1. Uniform:

       a. BDU/ACU complete.

       b. Pistol Belt w/Canteen full of water

   2. The team moves to the pallet with the blocks and moves them to the other pallet.

STANDARDS: All thirty blocks / posts will be moved from one pallet and be stacked on the
other pallet. A 5 minute penalty and will be added for each broken block.

                    GOLDEN VALLEY RAIDER CHALLENGE
EVENT: Raider Challenge Course

STATION: Rope Climb

TASK: Each member of the team will be required to climb a 25-foot rope, ring the bell at the
top, come back down and tag the next team member.

CONDITONS:

   1. Uniform:

       a. BDU/ACU complete.

       b. Pistol Belt w/Canteen full of water


   2. All members of the team can assist the team member climbing the rope as far as no other
team members’ feet leave the ground other than the one climbing the rope.

STANDARDS:

    1. One (1) minute will be added to course run time for each violation of the instructions in
the above requirements.


SAFETY:

   1. Do not slide down the rope or jump off. There is no penalty but injury can occur.

                    GOLDEN VALLEY RAIDER CHALLENGE
EVENT: Raider Challenge Course                                                       ENCL#6

STATION: Rope Management and Knots Test

TASK: Each team will be given a section of rope and completed DA Form 5752-R (Rope Log-
Usage and History) (FM 3-97.61) and will be required to check for mistakes and to identify from
pictures the following:

       a. Bight. A bight of rope is a simple bend of rope in which the rope does not cross
       itself.
       b. Loop. A loop is a bend of a rope in which the rope does cross itself.
       c. Half Hitch. A half hitch is a loop that runs around an object in such a manner as
       to lock or secure itself.
       d. Turn. A turn wraps around an object, providing 360-degree contact.
       e. Round Turn. A round turn wraps around an object one and one-half times. A
       round turn is used to distribute the load over a small diameter anchor (3 inches or less). It
       may also be used around larger diameter anchors to reduce the tension on the knot, or
       provide added friction.
       f. Running End. A running end is the loose or working end of the rope.
       g. Standing Part. The standing part is the static, stationary, or nonworking end of
       the rope.
       h. Lay. The lay is the direction of twist used in construction of the rope.
       i. Pigtail. The pigtail (tail) is the portion of the running end of the rope between the
       safety knot and the end of the rope.
       j. Dress. Dress is the proper arrangement of all the knot parts, removing

STATION: Triathlon

TASK: Two team members will represent the team in the following: 1 mile run, Pullups, and
archery.

CONDITONS:

   1. Uniform:

       a. BDU/ACU complete.

       b. Pistol Belt w/Canteen full of water


    2. Team members will each run the one mile course for time. The slowest time will be the
time for the team. Upon completion team members will move to the pull-up bars, don a flak
vest, and do as many pullups as possible. Each repetition subtracts 10 seconds from the one mile
time. The team members will then move to the archery point and fire one arrow with one minute
being subtracted for each hit on the target. STANDARDS:
