                                      ROLE OF THE MENTOR

The role of the mentor we hope will be enjoyable and fulfilling but many may feel unsure of what is
expected of them. To help give you an idea of the role, here is a description of skills and knowledge
that may be useful.

1. Mentoring session
   A mentor should provide both pastoral and educational support. As part of this, you should
   provide one to one meetings with your retainee for approximately one hour per month. The
   following may be to be covered:

      Breadth of clinical experience

      Helping retainer identify learning needs

      Problem case analysis
      Time management review
      Review of consultation skills including video analysis

      Referrals
      Analysis of team working skills e.g. MSF

      QOF and contract issues


2. Personal educational plan
The mentor should discuss the Personal Education Plan with the retainer on an annual basis at the

3. Mentor’s Annual Report

   This annual report should be discussed at one of the monthly mentoring sessions


4. Integration of the retainer into the Practice.

   To facilitate this, the following should take place

     meetings
   Audit (mandatory for national appraisal       Attendance at practice business meetings
     and revalidation)

5. The mentor should be familiar with the following:

      Learning Needs assessment
      Personal Education Plans see above
      Practice based audit
      Significant Event Analysis

6. There may be occasions where another member of the team might be more appropriate to
discuss certain topics with the retainee in the monthly educational sessions. This should be
encouraged. Eg PN, PM, other partners, pharmacists.
