                     Setting the scene…

 Psychology became very poignant after the Second World War
with a number of war veterans returning home suffering from
Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, (PTSS) not that it had been
diagnosed as that at that time.
 There was a significant increase in the number of patients being
referred to psychologists, and counsellors so therefore an
increase in the number of persons needing qualifications in
    these roles.
 Basically this was classified as negative based psychology,
patients’ were “broken” and were seeing or having counselling
to be mended or “fixed” so they could get back into mainstream
    lifestyles.

                              History in brief
               previously 1920 – 30’s
 primarily dedicated to  three main areas: - -
addressing mental illness and - understanding ordinary
‘fixing’ those suffering from human life to help people
    such become more productive and
                                            fulfilled,
                                            - understanding and nurturing
                                            genius and
                                            - the study and treatment of
                                            mental illness.

Martin Seligman  psychology more importantly
                                            is the acquisition of “mental
                                            wellness” and should be open
                                            to everyone not just those
                                            deemed to be unwell.

                       As we see it now…

 Counseling is the art of helping basically healthy people
work through the normal developmental issues, decisions,
problems and even crises that come to all of us in life.
Some examples: choosing a career, losing a parent,
    divorce.

 Sometimes it just helps to have somebody to talk to,
somebody whose compassion we trust and whose wisdom
    we respect.

             The counselling process

The counselling process will depend on the individual
counsellor, the individual client and the specific issue

“Counselling is a confidential process primarily focused o-n
empowering and enhancing the psychological well-being of
the client, thus enabling the client to reach their full
potential. The ‘counselling’ process is about the Counsellor
supporting, assisting and guiding the client to work through
their issues addressing their needs at their own pace,
empowering the client to strive and pursue their chosen
    pathway.”
