Argumentative Research
CITATIONS
• Documentation is the information in the
paper that tells what sources you used,
and it also gives credit to the original
source.
Basic Citation
• Place the citation at the end of the
sentence that contains the material you
are documenting. The citation should
appear after the last word of the
sentence but before the end mark.
• Ex:The Oklahoma migrants found “not
a Promised Land but a man-blighted
Eden” (Crockett 195).
• Notice that the period (end mark) comes after
the parentheses.
Citation with Author’s Name in Text
• If the name of the author is clear from
the context in which the parenthetical
citation appears, then give only the
page number.
• Ex: As H. Kelly Crockett has pointed
out, the Oklahoma migrants found “not
a Promised Land but a man-blighted
Eden” (195).
Citation of More than One Page
• When citing more than one page, use a
hyphen to separate the numbers
unless the pages are consecutive.
• Ex: French points out that “The Grapes
of Wrath has been applauded
throughout the world since its
publication” (147-148).
Works Cited
• Begin your Works Cited page on a separate
page at the end of your research paper. It
should have the same one-inch margins and
last name, page number header as the rest
of your paper.
• Label the page Works Cited (do not
underline the words Works Cited or put them
in quotation marks) and center the words
Works Cited at the top of the page.
• Double space all citations, but do not skip
spaces between entries.
• Alphabetize your entries.
Header
• Excluding the Title Page, there will be
a header in the upper right hand corner
of each page. You will insert your last
name and the page number.
• Ex. McCardle 2
