Thank you for your interest in our school and for requesting an application form for the
position of Headteacher. We hope that you will find the following informative and that
it will assist you in completing your application.
James Bateman Junior High School is situated in the residential area of Knypersley
which lies on the outskirts of the town of Biddulph in the Staffordshire Moorlands,
midway between the city of Stoke on Trent and the market town of Congleton in
Cheshire. At present we have 379 pupils on roll, unlike many schools, our numbers
continue to remain stable. The introduction of TLR’S allowed Governors to completely
overhaul the management structure. There are currently 22 teachers including
members of the Senior Leadership Team and 4 are Faculty Leaders, in addition we have
3 Cover Supervisors and 7 Teaching Assistants. We have a number of support staff
including 4 administration staff, ICT, Science and DT Technicians and a Site
Supervisor. The Senior Leadership Team consists of the Headteacher, Acting Deputy
Head, Assistant Head and School Manager. We have recently brought our cleaning and
catering provision in-house enabling greater control over the services to meet the
needs of the school.
We are guardians of Biddulph Grange Gardens and 3 years ago we changed the school
name to reflect the history associated with the gardens this enabled us to also change
the uniform for our pupils. All of this instilled a greater sense of pride not only from
our school community but also from the wider community.
Pupil progress and attainment continues to improve year on year, the introduction of
the shortened KS3 for our Y8 pupils ensures that when those pupils leave at the end of
Y8 many have attained levels expected for pupils at the end year of Y9. We are
working hard to bring attainment of boys, particularly in literacy and reading, in line
with other groups of students.
We have recently been awarded the Boxall Quality Mark for Nurture Care, have been
awarded the Healthy School’s Status for a second time and have been assessed for
Dyslexia Friendly Status Level 2. Our last OFSTED Inspection took place on 25 th and
26th May 2011 a copy of the report is included in the information pack.
The school has excellent facilities with specialist teaching areas including 2 science
labs, 2 dedicated ICT suites, music room, food technology room and art and DT rooms.
There are substantial outside areas which include tennis courts and environmental
areas. Our all-weather pitch which was constructed during the summer of 2003 is used
extensively not only by our own pupils but by pupils from schools within the pyramid.
We offer wrap around care for our pupils beginning with a Breakfast Club where pupils
have the opportunity to have breakfast in a safe and secure environment. The after
school club called ‘Time Out’ also provides a secure and safe environment where pupils
can complete homework and engage in a variety of activities.
Exciting changes are taking place within the pyramid of schools. Greater formal
collaboration has been established with schools now forming the ‘Biddulph Schools’
Partnership’, this partnership enables us to have better purchasing power for a variety
of services, we already have an ICT agreement where schools with ICT Technicians are
able to offer support to first schools who are not in the fortunate position to have
their own technician. The partnership is in its formative stages but is moving forward
quickly, and will be a crucial part of the vision our new Headteacher has for taking
James Bateman Junior High School to even greater levels of achievement. All of this is
taking place in order that all children within the partnership of schools’ receive the
best education possible.
You are warmly invited to visit our school prior to completing your application. If you
