                                        RE: Notice of AYP Status

August 29, 2011

Dear Parents,

The Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) provides information to parents/guardians
who have children attending schools identified as needing improvement to be notified of the school’s
academic achievement. Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) is one the cornerstones of ESEA which
measures year-to year student achievement on statewide tests. Title I schools that do meet the State
standard for AYP in the same subject for two or more consecutive years are placed on Needs Improvement

Your child attends Mount Zion High School, which receives Federal Title I Funds to assist students in
meeting state achievement standards. Your child’s school did not make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)
for the 2010-2011 school year, resulting in Needs Improvement level 4 (NI-4) status under ESEA. As a
result, Mount Zion High School continues to develop a plan for student achievement in accordance with
ESEA, specifically addressing the reason why the school is identified as Needs Improvement. A critical
portion of the success plan is parent participation and support; which, we would like your input. We hope
that as a parent, you will become involved in our school’s improvement initiatives as we continue to
monitor student achievement and set high expectations.

Thank you for your continued support.
