“La cura delle vespè”

Winter was over and the beans of an afternoon sun came to rejoice days.
Marcovaldo spent a few hours looking at the leaves sprouting… He was
sitting on a bench, waiting for the time to start work again.
An old man Mr Rizieri used to sit next to him. He was alone in the world and
suffered from rheumatism. Marcovaldo, as usual unpacked his lunch and, while
eating it, looked at the old man reading a news-paper. He was looking for new
remedies for his pains, like bee’s venom.
While walking Marcovaldo saw a wasp and followed it as far as a tree, where he
found a nest in the trunk.
So he tried to capture a wasp, using a jar in which there was some jam, left that
soon caught a wasp.
Mr Rizieri, who was waiting for Marcovaldo’s arrival impatient, soon put the jar
near his loins. A wasp went out from the jar and sting the old man.
Everyone learnt about it and a queue of aching people, waiting for the new remedy,
formed outside Marcovaldo’s house. So his three children had to look from other
Michelino ran to the trunk but, as he went too close to the wasps nest, he was
stung and dropped the jar.
The jar fell in the wasps nest. A moment of silence followed and Michelino had time
to step back but…
An angry swarm came out of the nest and went to the house where Marcovaldo
was waiting with his patients. Soon the room was full of wasps and everyone
started to wiggle in an attempt to kill them.
Soon the firemen and the ambulance arrived and took Marcovaldo to the hospital.
He was aching and unable to reply to his clients’ imprecations.
