The Mathematics faculty aims to enable all students to reach their maximum potential by
employing a variety of teaching methods on a range of courses. Imaginative use of
practical and open-ended activities is encouraged. The faculty contributes to the school’s
delivery of ICT.
The Mathematics faculty has a strong ethos of teamwork.
At present the faculty consists of 8 full-time and 5 part-time members of teaching staff,
including an AST, and one full time teaching assistant. In the new school building the
Mathematics department has eleven teaching rooms and an ICT suite, all on one floor,
together with two Faculty office/storage areas. The department is well resourced with
books, practical equipment and 30 Netbooks. All rooms have an interactive whiteboard.
At Key Stage 3, 125 students are set into five ability groups. Students across the
curriculum are in two bands according to which House they are in, giving ten groups in
each year. We annually hold a Happy Puzzle Day in year 7, a Crystal Maze Activity Day
with year 8, and a Trading Game activity with year 9, alongside other PLTS linked
activities. Students in all years participate in the National Maths Challenge.
At Key Stage 4, 125 students are set into six ability groups, hence the class sizes benefit
from the addition of the extra group. We are currently following AQA Modular
Specification 4360. Some Year 11 students in the highest sets will also be entered for the
iGCSE Further Mathematics qualification.
In the Sixth Form we offer AS level courses based on the Edexcel specifications made up
of three modules: Core Mathematics (C1), Core Mathematics 2 (C2) and Statistics (S1)
Students then go on to complete the A-level with a further 2 Core modules, and
Mechanics 1. We also have a Further Mathematics group in each of years 12 and 13. For
this students study six modules in Year 12, and a further six modules in Year 13. Each
year a substantial proportion of Further Mathematics group gain double A/A* grades.
Students in Year 12 are able to study a one-year modular GCSE course.
