ASB/CLASS ELECTIONS
IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER
Feb 27th–March 9th, 2012= Pick up election packets in the Activities Office/Finance
Office.
March 1st, 2012= Informational meeting for ASB/Class candidates in room 912 during
the first 20 minutes of both lunches. You will also sign up for interview times at this
meeting.
March 9th, 2012= All ASB candidate forms, typed resume, typed one page summary and
parent letter are due to the Activities Office by 3:30pm.
March 9th, 2012= All ASB/Class candidates attend MANDATORY lunch meeting in room
912 during the first 20 minutes of both lunches to go over campaign guidelines and inter-
view signups.
March 19th-23rd, 2012= ASB Executive candidates campaign & interviews in Career
Center
March 21st, 2012= ASB Speeches in the Quad
March 22nd, 2012= Elections- Every 2nd period class votes!
March 23rd, 2012= ASB runoff elections if needed!
March 26th-March 30th, 2012= ASB Commissioners Interviews in Career Center
March 26th-March 30th, 2012= Class candidates campaign
April 11th, 2012= Class speeches in quad
April 12th, 2012= Class elections near cafeteria
April 13th, 2012= Class runoff elections if needed

2012-2013
Independence High School
Student Government Requirements
1. Grade Point Average
o Each member must maintain a 2.5 GPA at each quarter grading period.
o If a member does not maintain a 2.5 GPA that member will be placed on probation
for one grading period and will not be allowed to participate in any ASB activities.
The member must attend and participate in classroom activities each day if they
are enrolled in the leadership class. If at the end of any other grading period dur-
ing the year that member has not raised their GPA to 2.5 they will be removed
from office and student government for that year.
o Students running for student government must have a 2.5 GPA at the time of elec-
tions.
2. Student Leadership Class
o All members holding an ASB office should be enrolled in a leadership class unless
it does not fit into a impacted schedule.
3. Responsibilities
o All members are expected to attend all mandatory ASB activities, including, but
not limited to, rallies, fundraisers, community service projects, workdays, team-
building/bonding activities, meetings and working student store/ concessions.
o Your grade in leadership class will be determined on the following: participation in
required activities, attendance, punctuality, assignments, effort, attitude, re-
ports, leadership curriculum, and growth of your leadership skills. Missed activi-
ties for other school activities (sports, drama, choir, etc) can be made up by doing
alternate assignments or activities.
4. Conduct
o Members of student government must maintain a positive attitude toward the ad-
visor, school personnel, members of ASB, and others on campus.
o You represent Independence High School whether you are at a school function or
not. If the advisor feels in any way that the reputation of the school or student
government has been jeopardized, a parent will be notified and actions may result
in removal from office.
o Violation of the activity/athletic conduct code will result in immediate loss of eli-
gibility and student may be removed from office.
o Members of Student government are role models to others at school and away
from school and should strive to exhibit exemplary behavior at all times.
5. Cost
o Members of ASB over the course of the school year may be required to pay for
the following items:
1. ASB Polo $25.00 approx.
2. ASB t-shirt $10.00 approx.
3. ASB sweatshirt $25.00 approx
4. Leadership retreat $50.00 - $100.00 approx
o Information on payment for these items will be issued in the fall.
o Fundraisers will be made available to help reduce costs.
o Optional costs may include Leadership Camp ($250 approx), Overnight conference
($150.00 approx.), CASL conference ($200.00 approx plus travel expenses). We
do not attend all of these and may not attend any and in most cases small groups
would attend rather than the entire student government group. I have just listed
these in case we attend one of these programs. We will fundraise to offset or
cover the cost of these events if we attend.
6. Selection Process
o ASB Cabinet Officer/Class Officers will be selected by the following criteria:
1. 2.5 GPA
2. In good standing with the school
3. All paperwork turned in on time
4. Scoring for all officers will be based on 50% popular vote, and 50% interview,
teacher recommendations, resume, and one page summary combined.
5. Scoring for all appointed/honorary members will be determined 100% from the
interview, teacher recommendations, resume and one page summary.
6. The interview committee may consist of, but not limited to, the ASB Advisor,
at least one other staff member, and three ASB members.
o ASB Commissioners will be selected based on the following criteria:
1. 2.5 GPA
2. In good standing with the school
3. All paperwork turned in on time
4. Scoring for all commissioners will be determined 100% from the interview,
teacher recommendations, resume, and one page summary combined.
5. The interview committee may consist of, but not limited to, the ASB Advisor, at
least one other staff member, and the ASB cabinet (president, VP, secretary,
treasurer).
6. Student Government Resume
1. Type a 1 page essay on why you want to be a part of Independence governing
board including your leadership philosophy and any strengths and or experience
you have that would help you be a positive leader and role model on Independ-
ence’s campus. (MUST BE TYPED!)
2. Type a 1 page Leadership Resume. Please follow the format below.

Dear Parents,
Welcome to the 2012-2013 student government selection process! Please read all the in-
formation provided concerning the selection process of ASB and Class officers. There are
important dates, guidelines, requirements, and costs in this packet. Please be sure to go
over each of them with your child.
Student government requires a lot of time and effort both in and out of school. Many of
the events and activities that ASB members are involved in are held on nights, weekends,
before and after school. There will also be some summer activities and a training day in
August that all members need to attend.
We realize the importance of parental support for the members of Independence High
School student government. At times, parents will be called upon to provide transporta-
tion to and from various events, participate in fundraising activities, and help chaperone
events. Your support is vital to making our class and all of its functions successful.
ASB members are all required to attend many of events, attend scheduled meetings and
teambuilding activities, working at the April Freshmen Orientation, participating in the
August Aloha (back to school week activities) attend the teambuilding BBQ before school
starts and many other events throughout the year.
We look forward to working with you in ensuring the best possible experience for your
student, as we all work together to make Independence High School and its leadership
program one of the best in the state.

What is expected of an ASB officer?
There are several activities that take place on campus and as an officer you are required to participate and be involved
in the majority of those activities. Your job as an officer extends beyond holding office and planning activities you are
a leader on and off campus therefore you are held to a higher standard. Make sure that you are ready for the respon-
sibility that comes with being an elected leader on campus.
STUDENT BODY PRESIDENT
What does the ASB President do?
He or she presides over all Executive Board meetings (in charge of creating the agenda, knowing parliamentary proce-
dure, scheduling meetings, etc.)
Is committee chair person for Air Band
Represents Independence at “Kern Association of Student Leaders” (KASL) meetings .
Attends conferences and meetings that affect the entire student body.
Welcomes visitors and delegates to the campus, and gives tours when needed.
Represents Independence on the “Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council.”
Fills in as Master of Ceremonies at rallies, as needed.
Assigns and delegates duties to the officers of the Executive Board and follows up in order to ensure that the activi-

STUDENT BODY SECRETARY
What does the ASB Secretary do?
Keep accurate minutes of all ASB meetings including all discussion, votes and expenditures made by the Executive
Board.
Prepares and presents the minutes from the previous meeting at each official meeting in order for Executive Board
approval.
Performs other secretarial duties for the ASB Executive Board as assigned by the President (writes thank-you notes,
calls members to remind them of activities etc.)
In charge of all documentation of the ASB for auditing purposes.
What is required of the ASB Secretary?
Attendance at all ASB Executive Board meetings.
Enrolled in the Student Leadership Class.
Several days out of class each quarter for activities.
Professional quality notes on ASB executive discussions and decisions.
STUDENT BODY TREASURER
What does the ASB Treasurer do?
Keeps an accurate record of all ASB checks and expenditures.
Prepares and presents all purchase orders and invoices at each official meeting for Executive Board approval.
Reviews and signs all purchase orders and checks to be spent out of the Student Body accounts.
Counts and records all ticket sales at ASB sponsored events (dances etc.)
What is required of the ASB Treasurer?
Attendance at all ASB Executive Board meetings.

COMMISSIONER OF ATHLETICS
What does the Commissioner of Athletics do?
1. Organizes and presides over all Sports Awards Ceremonies as needed.
2. Co-Chairperson of the Homecoming Committee.
3. Assists the Director of Athletics whenever needed
4. Assists at home track events.
What is required of the Commissioner of Athletics?
1. Attendance at all ASB Executive Board meetings
2. Represent the needs of the Athletics department and athletes at the ASB meetings
3. Enrolled in the Student Leadership class
4. Several days out of class each quarter for activities
5. Ability to work with adults, including coaches and Athletic Director
COMMISSIONER OF CLUBS
What does the Commissioner of Clubs do?
1. He or she is the chair of the Inter-Club Council (which includes the presidents of each club on the campus)
2. Communicates regularly with the club presidents in order to represent their interest at the ASB meetings
3. Organizes Club Food Sale Days
4. Coordinates multi-club projects when requested by the club presidents or the Executive Board
5. Keeps record of the officers, activities and meetings of all clubs
6. Sees that each club meets the minimum service project requirement (1 per semester)
7. With the Commissioner of Public Relations, coordinates club participation in club fair day.
8. Prepares and updates the Clubs on Campus brochure

What does the ASB Historian do?
1 Keep pictorial records of all Student Body functions and activities
2 Prepares a scrapbook at the end of the year which includes pictures of all activities and special events as well
as journals to accompany the pictures
3 Chairperson of the Election committee, and, as such, runs ASB and Class Elections
4 Record minutes at all meetings not attended by the ASB Secretary
5 Co-Chairperson of the Homecoming Committee
6 Acts as Parliamentarian. (Reminds the Executive Board of Parliamentary procedure when meeting discussion
strays from approved agenda)
What is required of the ASB Historian?
1. Attendance at all ASB Executive Board meetings
2. Enrolled in the Student Leadership class
3. Several days out of class each quarter for activities
4. An outstanding picture scrapbook at the end of the year
COMMISSIONER OF SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
What does the Commissioner of Social Activities do?
1. Responsible for coordinating events on campus.
2. He or She is the Chairperson of the Winter Formal, Homecoming Committee, and Air Band Committee
4. Attends conferences and meetings, which affect the student body of Independence

3. Excessive promotion on and off campus
4. Required to make flyers, posters, and announcements for ASB.
COMMISSIONER OF RALLIES -2
What does the Commissioner of Rallies do?
1. Serves as Master of Ceremonies at all school rallies
2. Prepares and plans the dates of all rallies and insures that the rally is on the master calendar
3. Arranges for a DJ when necessary for all rallies
4. Coordinates the game and activities to be played at the rallies (this includes getting volunteers for activities
well in advance of the rally, and coordinating rally rehearsals)
5. Works with the Activity Director to coordinate activities to build school spirit
6. In charge of Homecoming Week activities
What is required of the Commissioner of Rallies?
1. Attendance at all ASB Executive Board meetings
2. Enrolled in the Student Leadership class

COMISSIONER OF COMMUNITY SERVICE
What does the Commissioner of Community Service do?
1. Organize and coordinate community service activities for both ASB and clubs.
2. Coordinate campus wide service events (canned food drive, Adopt A Star).
3. Monitor community service requirements for all clubs.
What is required of the Commissioner of Community Service?
1. Attendance at all ASB Executive Board meetings.
2. Enrolled in student leadership.
3. Work closely with the commissioner of clubs, club presidents, and advisors.
COMMISSOINER OF TECHNOLOGY
What does the Commissioner of Technology do?
1. Create, edit/censor and load playlists for all school events that require music (spirit week, random Fridays, rallies)
2. Setup and work sound system during spirit week, random Fridays, rallies, etc.
3. Work with Mr. Beatty on reforming the school website.
4. Create Power Point Presentations when necessary for ASB sponsored events.
What is required of the Commissioner of Technology
1. Attendance at all ASB board meetings.
2. Enrolled in student leadership.
3. Work closely with the Rally Commissioners, Social Activities and Commissioner of Public Relations.

What is required of the Class President?
Work before and after school when needed in the Activities Office.

***Special note regarding the Leadership classes:
All officers are encouraged to enroll in a Leadership class. This will help ASB plan events and meet togeth-
er on a regular basis. You will find it difficult to carry out your duties by only going to the monthly execu-
tive board meetings. If you do not have room in your schedule you can still run for an ASB or Class office.
