Cell Analogies Project Block 5-8 Due: 2/8/2011
                                                                     Block 1-4 Due: 2/9/2011

Standard LS1C: Cells contain specialized parts for determining essential functions such as regulation
of cellular activities, energy capture and release, formation of proteins, waste disposal, the transfer of
information, and movement.

Your main task is to create analogies about the parts of a cell and their functions.
You will also create a visual display of those analogies.

An analogy is a comparison between two things that are similar in some respects, but
otherwise are different. An explaining of something by comparing it point by point
                           with something else." -- Webster's

Instructions:
1. Label a diagram of a plant OR animal cell. (You may draw your own cell or use a photocopy.)
Please label 8 of the following organelles:

       cell membrane nucleus lysosome
       cytoplasm endoplasmic reticulum vacuole
       mitochondrion golgi apparatus chloroplast
       cell wall

2. Identify the function of each organelle you labeled on your diagram (use “Inside A Cell notes).

3. Create an analogy between the FUNCTION of each organelle and an everyday object, which has a
similar function. Your analogy must include the name of the cell part and the name of the
everyday object, the function of the cell part and the reason your analogy works!

Example: The nucleus is like a brain because it controls and coordinates the activities of the
whole cell in the same way the brain controls and coordinates activities of the body.

To exceed standard for this project, all your analogies must be a part of one system, such as a house,
school, kitchen, computer, etc. Please do not use a city, as that example was used in class.

4. Find or draw pictures of the everyday objects used for your analogies. Include these images in
your visual product, along with the written analogies, and the diagram of the cell.

5. Attach the rubric to the back of your visual. Please self-assess your project before you turn it in
