subsections (labs, discussions and other supplementary
sessions), with fewer than 20 students (fall enrollment) of the
total number of sections.
Class size 50+:
Percent of undergraduate class sections, excluding subsections
(labs, discussions and other supplementary sessions), with 50
students or more (fall enrollment) of the total number of sections.
Undergraduate courses in addition to graduate courses
in which an undergraduate student is enrolled for credits
are counted.

Class Data Analysis – Small Sections
Methodology
Main campus (Orlando); Non-web
Consider sections with 20 to 25 students
small classes intended
Count students above 19 for all sections of each course
If less than 10 students – re-assign to another section
If more than 10 students – add sections
Findings
232 sections have 20 to 25 students
13 courses have total of 10 or more students in excess of 19 per
section
08January2008 Enrollment Planning WorkgroupPresentation Title 12
Class Data Analysis – Small Sections
Courses requiring adding more sections
Only 20-25 students sections were considered Add 1
2 students in section of

excess of 19 in excess of 19
08January2008 Enrollment Planning WorkgroupPresentation Title 13
Class Data Analysis – Small Sections
What-if Scenario:
Add 15 sections total
Additional sections of size 2 to 19 = 232 + 15 = 247
Outcomes:
Total number of sections sized 2–19: 723 + 247 = 970
Total number of sections = 2,966 + 15 = 2,981
Percent of sections sized 2–19 = 970 / 2,981 = 32.5%
Improvement of about 8 percentage points
Students denied access to sections = 489 in 149 courses
“Theoretically” relocate all but 10 students to other sections

Class Data Analysis – Small Sections
Sections with 20 – 27 students:
455 sections counted
24 courses have 10 or more students in excess of 19 per section
Add 30 sections total
Additional 2 – 19 sections = 455 + 30 = 485
Outcome:
Total number of 2 – 19 sections: 723 + 485= 1,208
Total number of sections = 2,966 + 30 = 2,996
Percent of 2 – 19 sections = 1208/ 2996 = 40.3%
Improvement of about 16 percentage points
Students denied access to courses = 477 in 175 courses

Class Data Analysis – Large Sections
Methodology
Consider sections with 50 to 55 students
Count students above 49 for each course
If less than 10 – deny enrollment
If more than 10 – add sections
Main campus (Orlando) only
Findings
184 sections have 50 to 55 students
9 courses have total of 10 or more students in excess of 49 per
section

Class Data Analysis – Large Sections
What-if Scenario:
Add 10 sections total
5 sections with 2 – 19 students
5 sections with 20 – 49 students
Eliminated 50+ sections = 184
New total number of 2 – 19 sections: 723 + 5 = 728
New total number of 50+ sections: 777 – 184 = 593
New total number of sections = 2,966 + 10 = 2,976
Percent of 2 – 19 sections = 728 / 2,976 = 24.5%
Percent of 50+ sections = 593 / 2,976 = 19.9%
Improvement of 6 percentage points
Students denied access to courses = 299 in 85 courses

Conclusions
Class capacities over/under 20 often do not reflect actual
enrollment
Improving the class size metric (frequency of classes
under 20) does not require as many additional sections
as originally thought
It would require administrative costs of tracking/monitoring class
sizes
Some students would not be able to register for section of choice
Perhaps some areas of opportunities can be identified
Ex: 30% of honors classes were exactly 20
