SHORT TERM VISITING RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP SCHEME 2012
                                        Guidelines for Visits in 2012

CLOSING DATE: Monday, 24 October 2011

The Scheme

The aim of the Griffith University Short Term Visiting Collaborative Research Fellowships Scheme is to
develop collaborations with high quality national and international researchers, leading to applications to
external research funding such as ARC Future Fellowships, ARC Linkage Awards, or similar.

The scheme commemorates the contributions of Sir Allan Sewell and Professor James C. Jackson for
distinguished service to the University. Sir Allan Sewell’s official and unofficial contributions to the growth of
Griffith, especially his financial and administrative acumen, were of inestimable value to the University during
its formative years. The late Professor James C. Jackson is recognised for establishing strong relationships
between the University and universities of Southeast Asia.

Eligibility

Applicants seeking to visit the University from another organisation in Australia or from overseas may apply.
Applicants must have an outstanding track record relative to opportunity in order to be short-listed. At the
time of application the applicant must have at least five years professional experience since being awarded
their Research Doctorate. Successful applicants are expected to be based full-time at the University for the
duration of the Fellowship.
Preference will be given to applicants who will establish connections with significant numbers of Griffith
University academic staff.
Terms and Conditions
A Fellowship is awarded under the following terms and conditions:
1. Number of Fellowships available: one per Group
2. Funding available: Up to $10,000 per Fellowship (of which $8,000 will be contributed by the Research
Committee and $2,000 by the host Research Centre, School or Group)
Fellowship funds may be used for:
 Return economy class airfare for the Fellow between Brisbane and the Fellow’s home base. Fares
for dependants, visa charges, medical insurance and removal expenses will not be provided.
Claims for travel expenses will normally be paid on production of an invoice or a receipt from a
         travel agency.
 A weekly living allowance to be determined by the Director of the host Research Centre or Head of
the host School. The University can suggest options for accommodation but the Fellow is
         responsible for final arrangements.
3. The duration of the Fellowship shall be a minimum of four weeks and a maximum of 12 weeks. Fellows
are expected to be based at the University full time for the duration of the Fellowship.
4. Appointments must be completed within 12 months of a formal letter of offer.
5. Visiting Fellows are expected to make a substantial contribution to the academic life of the University,
including the delivery of a series of master classes directed at postgraduate students. Visiting Fellows
are encouraged to participate in workshops, seminars and similar activities of the University.
6. At the conclusion of the visit, Fellows are required to submit to the Office for Research a short (one
page) report summarising the research and collaboration undertaken during the visit. One year after the
conclusion of the award, Fellows must submit a detailed report describing the activities and outcomes of
the Fellowship. This should be endorsed and accompanied by an evaluative commentary by the Head of
School or Research Centre Director and forwarded to the Office for Research.

in accordance with the Griffith University Intellectual Property Policy

additional applications at any stage during the selection process.

Assessment Criteria

Excellence will be the primary criterion, both in terms of the visiting Fellow, the host Griffith University
researcher and the proposed collaboration. The selection panel will consider -
 The track record of the nominee and the host researcher (30%),
 The aims, significance, research plan and methodology of the proposed project (30%),
 The ability of the nominee to contribute to the establishment or strengthening of research links with
        Griffith (15%), and
 The likelihood that the nominee will collaborate with a member of the GU host element on an
externally funded research grant application (25%).

Assessment and Selection

Applications will be assessed by a panel convened by the Academic Group Dean Research. The panel will
make a recommendation to the DVCR through the Group PVC.
