Understanding Open Response Questions
Your child will be working this year on Open Response types of questions. Open
Response items assess your child’s ability to APPLY concepts we have covered
in class to new situations. We will be doing Open Response –type questions
across our curriculum (science, math, reading, language, social studies, etc.)
Open Response-type questions account for 2/3 of your child’s school
assessment once he/she reaches third grade.

“graded” (assessed) according to how much of the answer is correct and

For the children, we find that visuals and graphics help them to know how they
did. After grading, each child is conferenced with individually. At this time we
explain to the child why he/she did or did not score a 4. No matter the score,
each child is praised – and we always encourage best effort!
