15. UWA INTERNATIONAL TRAVELLERS

International SOS provides travel advisory, tracking and assistance services for UWA travellers. For UWA
international travellers over the past 12 months

There were 44 travellers to Extreme Risk (either medical and/or country risk) destinations. The regular
travel reports were used to follow up on some of these trips to get reassurance that the travellers were
adequately prepared and authorised to go. There have been no significant incidents to travellers to
   these destinations.
Travel Tracker has been used for significant events in Queensland (cyclone Yasi in February 2011) and
Japan (earthquake and tsunami in March 2011) in determining whether there were UWA travellers in
these areas at the time. In the Queensland event there were 5 students and 1 staff and for Japan there
were 15 students present. In both cases less than 50% of travellers were recorded with International
SOS and it was through the contactable travellers and other sources that the total numbers of affected
travellers were determined. In the Japan incident International SOS was used to provide advice and
was placed on standby to provide evacuation and other assistance to UWA travellers as required.
There has been four medical incidents involving UWA travellers or there accompanying persons. In three
of these it was International SOS who contacted UWA. Typically there are four to five medical incidents
involving international UWA travellers or their companions each year.

The UWA Dangerous Goods licence is due for renewal on the 30 June. Information has been collected to
update the licence. Under new regulations significant works are required depending on the size and the type
of the holding. These matters are being worked on by sections within Facilities Management and local
areas. It is planned to submit the licence renewal and discuss with Dangerous Goods works that are
required to ensure full compliance with the current regulations.

Smoking will be banned on all UWA campuses (including grounds) and properties, as from 1 January 2012.
This is to support and promote a healthy environment for staff, students and visitors to our campuses.

the educative, support and compliance components of introducing this change met for the first time on 2

20. UNIVERSITY SAFETY COMMITTEE ANNUAL REPORT 2010

includes all Deans on 14 April. Also enclosed was the regular UWA Incident/Injury Statistics Report (Dec
2010 – Mar 2011) and an 8 slide PowerPoint on accountability and responsibility aspects of the new Work
Health and Safety Harmonisation (attached separately with the agenda). The USC Annual Report is
                                                                                              th

21. OHS RESOURCING

Safety and Health has been successful in securing ongoing funding of $250,000 ($50,000 each for 5 higher
risk Faculties and work areas) and a part time Chemical Safety Officer. Financial support has also been
obtained for a staff well-being program for 2 years which will require the appointment of a Health and
Well-being Officer. The use of the 5 x $50,000 for safety projects and related improvements was supported
by the committee.

22. OHS HARMONISATION

There have been a number of means by which the OHS Harmonisation process and implications have been
communicated to staff including Seminars (September 2010), newsletters, UMG meetings and memos.
UWA contributed to comments on draft codes as part of a joint WA Universities submission in early April
                                                                                                              st
2011. A UWA working group will be formed to consider and prepare for the impacts of this change due on 1
January 2012.

23. ON-LINE OHS TRAINING MODULE

The three OHS Training Modules have been installed in WebCT. CATL is required to register users in order
to gain access (via Pheme) to these modules. Safety and Health will commence this process and inform
users at how to access and use the modules. Each module has a quiz and users are able to print off their
results. It was requested that the option of being able to print off a certificate on completion of each module
be examined.

The process to require all new staff to complete these will be developed. It is desirable that the completion of
these modules be recorded in ESS. It was noted that in 2012 UWA will move to the Moodle (Learning
Management System) which will be easier to register new users. The three modules will need to be
reviewed to incorporate the OHS Harmonisation changes.
