LWMS Grand Canyon Circuit Spring Rally

The theme for the rally was One Body – Many Parts.
Pastor Stephen Hein, Christ Lutheran Church, Prescott Valley, led the rally attendees in an opening devotion. A
freewill offering was taken at this time.
The meeting was opened by President Lori Hauser at 9:00 a.m. A special thank you was given to those who
participated in the opening service. She also gave a special welcome to all the rally attendees, with special
mention of the 9 first time attendees.
Roll call by congregations was taken. There were 130 ladies, 4 pastors, 9 men, and 3 guests present, for a total
A moment of silence was observed for our Sisters in Christ and one pastor who had passed on to their eternal
home in heaven since our last meeting. They include: Marilyn Canfield, Christ, Prescott Valley; Irene Jamieson,
Christ, Prescott Valley; Irene McCoy, Our Savior, Sun City; Mildred Vershum, Calvary, Chandler, Arlyne Riedel,
Christ, Prescott Valley; Pastor Milton Burk, First, Prescott.
The minutes from the Fall Rally, October 1, 2011, were read silently. A motion was made by Fran Maurer,
Christ, Prescott Valley, to approve the minutes as corrected. Karen Manning, Holy Cross, Tucson, seconded the
motion. MOTION PASSED.
Treasurer Debbie Petersen presented her report. The report shows an ending bank balance of $4,847.66, after
disbursements were made. The treasurer’s report was ACCEPTED, SUBJECT TO AUDIT.
Befriend A Mission report:
Lynnette Stahmann gave an update on our circuit’s BAM assignments. Lynnette gave a detailed report from
Staff Minister Adam Lambrecht, Crown of Life Lutheran Church, Pueblo West, Colorado. Crown of Life is
experiencing growth in youth and adult confirmation classes, as well as increased participation in teen events.
It was reported that Sarah’s cancer had not spread as originally suspected and she is now cancer free.
A detailed report of the other BAM assignments will be emailed to all the reporters.
Grand Canyon Circuit split:
Clara Naber, chairperson for the circuit split committee, reported on the results of the ballot count. By a
margin of 2 to 1, the member congregations voted to split in to two separate circuits. It was 46 years ago that
the Grand Canyon Circuit was started. The new appointed boards for each circuit were introduced. The first
official meeting of each new circuit will be held today, following the presentation by our guest speaker.
Fall Retreat update:
Debbie Petersen gave a video presentation on the weekend retreat that will be held at Chapel Rock Camp,
Prescott, Arizona, November 2-4. Brochures were placed in each rally attendee’s folder, including registration.
Registrations are being accepted immediately, up until August 15.
Mission Box collection: A motion to accept the Board’s recommendation to send Mission Box monies for Asia
Lutheran Seminary (ALS) projects (WM2012-21) was made by Kay Nelson, Calvary, Chandler, seconded by
Diane Kramm, Grace, Tucson. MOTION PASSED. The amount to be sent is $1,887.79.
Freewill offering: The Board has recommended sending today’s freewill offering to Crown of Life, Colorado
(BAM assignment). A motion to accept the Board’s recommendation was made by Marilyn Hamilton, Peace,
Cottonwood, seconded by Syd Holt, Emmanuel, Tempe. MOTION PASSED. The amount to be sent is $1,444.00
Pastor Grube gave an update on home and world missions. Five new home missions have been dedicated.
Canada has become self-supporting, like Africa and Mexico. He also gave an update on the blessings received
for missions through the CEF program, with over $1 million going for grant money.
Ruth Schaller announced that the Cuban Lutheran Church has asked to join the Mexican Lutheran Church in
synod and requested that these two be kept in everyone’s prayers.
Lori Hauser presented a slide show on her visit to the Mexican LWMS Retreat in Puebla, Mexico.
Debbie Dyjak gave a brief talk on her and her son’s trip to Thailand.
Installation of officers:
Pastor Matthew Langebartels, St. Peter, Globe, installed the following to the west circuit: Clara Naber,
president; Merilyn Volkmann, president-elect; Lynnette Stahmann, vice president; Susie Hoffman, secretary,
Debbie Petersen, treasurer, Cathy Daichendt and Louise Sallquist, spiritual growth laywomen; Pastor Brady
Coleman, spiritual growth pastor. Pastor Kirby Spevacek, spiritual growth pastor, was not in attendance and
will be installed at the Fall Restreat in Prescott in November, 2012.
Pastor Brady Coleman, Pilgrim, Mesa, installed the following to the east circuit: Lori Hauser, president; Karen
Manning, president-elect; Ruth Schaller, vice president; Jesse Hauser, secretary; Diane Kramm, spiritual
growth laywoman; Pastor Curt Grube and Pastor Matthew Langebartels, spiritual growth pastors. Stephanie
Weinstein, treasurer, and Terri Guenther, spiritual growth laywoman, were not present at the rally and will be
installed at the Fall Retreat in Prescott in November.
The business meeting was adjourned at 11:35 a.m. with a meal prayer.
Following a break for lunch, the rally reconvened. Karen Manning gave an update on the upcoming convention
at North Carolina in June. Bambi Tuttle, vice president of International Lutheran Women’s Missionary Society,
gave a presentation on LWMS, Who Are We? – Show and Grow. The two new circuits then met separately for
a brief business meeting.
The rally ended with a devotion by Pastor Grube at 2:45 p.m.
