New Education in Nurture
Nurture International affiliation of existing schools & franchise of new
schools is a way to support schools to become light house of society, going
well beyond the notions of schools as providers of knowledge to become
transformers of society. The thought process behind Nurture in 1992
when DEVI Dignity Education Vision International, anon profit institution,
Started its first 15 schools in rural India and the subsequent formation of
the Council for Global Education in Washington D.C. USA, which was
established to create a new vision of education. Experimental schools
were started based on its philosophy of the four building block of
education in the Czech Republic in 1994 and in Island in 2000. These
experiments laid to the concretization of the Nurture International Model
of Schooling (NIMS). NIMS was first implemented in India since 2004 &
first implemented at City Montessori School, Lucknow. Its materials &
methods are now being implemented in over 900 schools nationwide. The
full affiliate model has been launched for the first time for
implementation in the session 2010-11. After 3 yr polite in several
schools across India.
The School Education Market
The waste majority of the Indian schooling sector is set in traditional
moulds which are hard to break. Education is an exciting sector at this
time in India. Though there are many schools getting into the reform
agenda on their own they countless others who would like to see their
education reformed but could do with support from other progressive
external groups. However there are very few players at the national level.
The field is barren so is our potential to make a huge impact. The schools
& institutions that will survive the future, will be those that are based on
the new premise of "compete with yourself" and not those whose
reformed agendas are limited to providing an improvement to the existing
system, however dramatic.
Nurture School Concept
A nurture education is a rounded education which encompasses the rounded
development of body, mind, heart & spirit of every child. In nurture education
every child is treated as special and every child compete with himself/
herself, to do their best always. It is a highly personalise and dynamic system
of education that incorporates concepts of mastery and self realization
teaching method includes differentiated teaching learning, active, interactive,
hands on and experiential learning along with the use of accelerated teaching
methods, MINEIMAX approaches and more. The outcome is joyful learning,
an intrinsic desire to learn, self mastery, self analysis, focus on beauty and
perfections and excellence and all things. So we do not rush through syllabus
at the cost of understanding we also see learning as 14 yr tunnel of learning =
tunnel of enlightenment and a process of perfections in both human and
academic sense instead of exam to exam cycles or one year cycle with 40
minute periods repeated for 14yrs. From classrooms arrangements into
groups to multi age settings to block scheduling, to flexible time tables that
allow scope for focus on areas of needed interventions and fine tuning to
capture student interest and imaginations to capture in their teachable
moments. To the use of the language of encouragement not praise to teacher
self assessment and empowerment through knowledge and up gradation to
the use of technology where needed (not everywhere), our methods span a
wide range. The NIMS method has been inspired by the philosophy and works
of Dr. Maria Montessori, Dr. Rudolf Steiner, Dr. Benjamin Bloom, John Holt, Dr.
& Dr. Jagdish & Dr. Bharti Gandhi (World citizenship) to the global Education
model of schooling of Dr. Sunita Gandhi as promoted by the council of global
education USA.
The Goal
Goal is transformation of schools, its method, its subtle massaging, what it
whispers into every child's ears, what it inspires in every human spirit and
what it delivers as outcome. current education is merely geared on exam
success our goal is to nurture lifelong learners, life skills to live beyond the
present constrains of society, to live with uncertainty & to embrace the
diversity of human potentialities. and for meaningful engagement with life to
become promoters of peace, world citizen, and proactive agents of social
transformation.
The Principle
1. Children learn best when they learn by themselves, through their own
metamorphosis, comparable from a cocoon a butterfly must emerge.
2. Teacher must be a facilitator, a joyful positive learning environment full
of positive reinforcement that says "you can do it" not "you cant." A helper
a mentor, a guide, an exemplar (behaviour), a psychologist, an
environmentalist. role model. School must be restored to its traditional
role.... (transformers of society)
a variety of learning environments are provided.
a child compete with himself not the others so reporting on assessments
is uplifting an empowering, Methods encourage honesty, the right
behaviour, 7 process over product, effort & improvement accounted as
more imp than accomplishment. Progress is a measure of success.
Success is measured on both inner & outer aspects, & the development of
body, heart & spirit, a broader objective report uses self analysis tools to
provide directions to a child's broader development.
The Methods
Course work is divided into manageable units for 4 stages of developments
Pre/Prim, Prim, Jun. & Senior with clear objectives & outcomes for each unit
of work & stage of development. The emphasis & the goal vary for each stage
of development for example
stage1 the primary years is a stage of encouragement,
stage2: the prim years is a stage of empowerment, the junior years focuses
on expressions, & the senior years on enlightenment. these over arching
goals are further divided into objectives for example: the 5 Ps-
P1: performance in the boards,
P2: Proficiency in English,
P3: Praise worthy Character,
P4: Personality
P5: Preparation for service to humanity. (Leadership training etc.)
Diagnostic & formative assessments are attached for each unite of work
with mastery as goal for each unit of work. Baseline & progress
assessments in the core subjects.
propel a child forward in a dynamic cycle away from class & age
considerations. indeed as we notice language skills for example in
ENGLISH vary between children that go beyond class & age
considerations.
Every chapter begins with a hands on interactive exercise called dramatic
presentation that involves Kinaesthetic learning. Visualization is built as a
core mechanism for learning, active learning environments are provided
through the use of slates, Time limits & peer work for example.
Field trips & theme based learning...

Starting A New School
and Leading it to Become the Best
Starting a school is not easy.
The kind of building you make defines the environment that you create
for the children.
The kind of furniture you buy reflects your education pedagogy.
A range of labs and the sports fields and courts, indoor / outdoor
children's gym (different from gyms for adults), activity rooms, swimming
pools, horse riding, mini zoo, etc., create many opportunities for your
children's development.
The services you provide matter equally, for example, a carefully planned
whole day school to cater to the busy parents, or afterschool activities in
the afternoons and on Saturdays.
The fee that you choose defines your school's profile and it must be
carefully thought through.
The salary structure you choose to give your teachers determines the
quality of people you will hire or retain.
Nurture aims at reaching out to every child taking
into consideration a child’s individuality...

limiting fresh construction work to evenings and holidays. Put the full
map and 3-D visual of your upcoming school on a hoarding near the
entrance so prospective parents can see what is coming up.
And, if you have to build a building from scratch, consult Nurture's
architect on BALA -- Building As A Learning Aid.
You will need to identify, define needs and order your furniture
according to the number of classrooms that will be utilised in Year 1.
Other aspects include such considerations as uniform, services and
facilities for teachers, lockers for children, Montessori and outdoor
play equipment, vans, buses, etc. for transport, fee billing, prospectus,
website, advertising, parent open houses, etc.
Initially branding and image is everything. After that, what retains parents and
moves your school from strength to strength is how good your education
programme is, especially academics
Once the image of school is made, it is hard to change that image.
Once the teachers are hired, it is hard to change them.
Once the furniture has been bought, it is expensive to change it.
These things will cost you dearly both in terms of your profiling
which impacts the number of children you will get and the physical
costs associated with your image makeover. It may also hamper the
quality of education and environment you can provide your children
with. The earlier you get experts on these aspects, the better.
After the school has started, however, the quality of instruction,
confidence and knowledge of the children, their personality
development, their joyfulness, variety of activities, moral education,
etc. will matter equally. A good show can get children admitted but
retaining them is more important.
Your publicity in Year 2 and beyond should depend more on word of
mouth than advertising.
Timing of the project is also crucial.
Starting a school in July makes no sense if a session begins in April.
You will lose a chunk of the market share for that year and you will
have to carry the project financially for much longer, ultimately
costing you more.
More importantly, parents and teachers gauge a school's success by
the number of children that join. A good start is therefore important.
If there are insurmountable difficulties, there may be justification for
starting later than ideal but not when the ideal is possible.
Market research will need to be done on your competitors, for
example, the number of children, fee structure, teacher's salary,
location of the school, its strengths and weaknesses. For this purpose,
the Area Survey Form will be needed, as provided herewith.
You will need to determine who is your target group, how far are they
from your school building and what fees are they able to pay. Will
you need a residential school? Which age group (for example the
school at outskirts will attract senior children more and you are not
likely to get younger children, for example, pre-primary, etc.)
Right start means right results.
One must open shop for admissions well in advance of the academic
session, to be able to get the maximum market share that is possible
in the first year. This applies, even if your building is under
construction.
Begin advertising early so as to get a chunk of the market share.
Remember, it takes time to get the word out and for people to feel you
out!
Before you advertise your school...
You will need to plan the number of teachers and other staff you
may need.
You will need to plan your staff salary structure.
You will need to have the fee structure, admission forms,
syllabus, booklist and prospectuses ready. You should also have
the admission's procedure in place complete with admission
forms, receipt books, prospectus, fee structure, any discount offer
and costing of any supplementary services, for example, extra
creativity, swimming, etc.
You will need to make signage on your school building. This will need
to be designed and ordered.
You will need to have a nationwide AD to recruit the Principal and
creative staff members, if they are likely not to be available locally.
You will need to appoint a PRO until the Principal is hired and even
beyond, to assist in the promotions process, to plan open days,
activities, follow-ups, etc.
You need to plan training of the teaching staff and the Principal in
advance of when the school begins operations, so that they can
explain your school's philosophy to the perspective parents and also
plan for the school's beginning.
In the beginning, you don't have picture of your own children, so you
will need help from the Nurture to get you pictures of other schools
in their group that reflect your school's pedagogy. You will also need
to write about yourself, what is Nurture, the methods you use in
Nurture and why, etc.
You will need the designs of a brochure, flyers, hoardings, etc. for the
market launch, complete with branding information with logos.
You will need to print all the marketing materials.
You will need to identify where the hoardings will go and then hire a
local agency to help you with marketing. Such a strategy also requires
study of the local market, for example, will it focus on neighbourhood
more or a city-wide market, or for a residential school, marketing
across many cities and rural areas, for example, all depending upon
where you think your clients are most likely to come from. Then you
will need to think of how long the marketing campaign will run for
and which media outlets will be used during that period, for example,
if radio or local TV are going to be included, or not, why or why not.
Nurture will help you in deciding based on your needs for the type of
project.
Some important considerations...
Though it is very hard to start a school, it is still harder to get the
first few children and to maintain quality after the school has been
well-established. You will need the support of your franchisor
throughout the process. Since Nurture provides not only branding
but also a full academic programme which is popular with parents, it
is more comprehensive a programme than generally available.
Many established schools face on-going problems even after a
school is well-established. These can be better addressed in Nurture.
Problems often include...
Not being able to attract the type of teachers you want (with good
spoken English, right attitudes, peppy personality, training and skills
for specific jobs, sufficient or desirable experience, etc.)
Not being able to retain teachers (due to marriage, husband's
transfer, move to another school, etc.)
Providing on-going in-service training to keep the staff up to date
with the Nurture pedagogy and upgrade new staff into new and
advanced teaching methods
Quality assurance and supervision, check on the Principal and
teachers
Motivation of staff
Handling of over indulging and demanding parents
Cleanliness of the school
Transport management
Get expert support
You don't want to become a CHICKEN WITH ITS HEAD CUTOFF,
running in too many directions at once.
Hiring a Principal will be one of the most critical decisions to be made
with Nurture's supervision.
You will still need to have financial control and create a system of
both cheques and balances, with all forms and procedures in place,
many of them according to the CBSE / other Board guidelines.
Nurture will provide on-going support, guidelines, systems set up in
all these aspects.
Branding, Know-How & Marketing Communications

Why get a brand?
It is the same reason as someone might start a hamburger shop. Imagine
you start a school called Some name School or CIS or Nurture
International School. The differences are quite obvious:
I. Starting up Some name School will be a lot harder; CIS/NIS much
easier as Nurture expert team will be behind you, supporting you
every step of the way.
II. You will earn more even after paying the fees (think Macdonalds and
other franchises).
III. In the present offer, you further recover a large proportion of your
fees just by the fact that you have a waiver on royalties till you have
250 children in whole schools, 50 in preschools.
IV. Starting up Somename School might even be more expensive as
mistakes along the way may be costly in terms of money spent,
wrong decisions or hiring, time or reputation loss.
V. Most importantly, it will take time to build up reputation, in the same
time as NIS will get you readymade customers. Even if you plan to
start many schools, you make take 10 years or longer to build
VI. Are putation big enough to be considered a brand, or you will need
to spend enormously to establish a market presence. In the
meantime, you could already be multiplying with NIS / CIS
profitably.
VII. If you have desire to set up a school in someone's name, CIS / NIS
can be "in the memory of" or "inspired by" So and So.
VIII. There is opportunity cost to your timing. If it takes you a year longer
to get your school started, for example, you are losing in terms of
opportunity cost. Should you have only land and wish to start in
2011/12, it is best you consult us immediately, rather than wait
another year. We can get you our readymade architectural plans
that can be unfolded in phases to get you a head start, if you have the
resolve to get going. You tell us you are keen, we will go the extra
mile to make it possible for you.
NURTURE INTERNATIONAL Individualized Assessments
a baseline survey which is done at the beginning of each tier and which
serves a diagnostic purpose, and; progress survey which is done at the
end of each tier which serves a formative purpose.
The detailed individualized reports which are derived from the two
surveys - the baseline and the progress surveys - enable a teacher to chart
out the progress of each student. The gauge of success for the individual
student is progress or improvement.
Nurture international class analysis reports:
Both the surveys are used in planning of the lessons, in whole class
instruction and in the implementation of enrichment/remedial classes It
also helps in the individualized planning of homework. In addition, a
teacher is gauged by the progress or improvement of her students as she
too gets a summary report for her class, including a comparative analysis
of the average performance of her class at the beginning and end of each
semester, and concept-wise average performance of each student.
NURTURE INTERNATIONAL Individualized Activity Packages
Based on the baseline surveys and the progress reports, an activity
package is customized for every student at the beginning of each
semester. The activity package consists of a suggested list of NURTURE
INTERNATIONAL materials that are most suited to the needs of each
student.
Integration Of Values
NURTURE INTERNATIONAL approach to learning is not only conscious of
values but seeks to integrate values in the fabric of the learning process
itself. With the innovation of values sheets which are incorporated in the
learning materials, and discovery approach to learning, students enjoy,
relate to and understand values better than direct approaches to the
teaching of values.
How will homework change in NURTURE INTERNATIONAL?
The nature of homework changes dramatically in the NURTURE
INTERNATIONAL process of learning. The student gets an individualized
package of materials that are customized to his needs. The student
works with these materials at home, in enrichment/remedial classes and
sometimes in class time. In this sense, homework for each semester is
planned out at the beginning of each semester. It is based on the needs
of each student as an individual. In consultation with the student and his
parents, each student is given a certain set of reachable goals. In
addition, the teacher may assign certain specific exercises for homework
in concepts she is teaching in the class as a whole, as a further gauge to
determine whether all students have understood a particular concept
and that all students move forward.
Does NURTURE INTERNATIONAL benefit fast or slow learners more?
The NURTURE INTERNATIONAL individualized programme is designed to
benefit all students, including those usually ignored in the educational
process - such as the exceptionally talented and the students weak in a
subject or subjects. In NURTURE INTERNATIONAL, all students get an
individualized plan for their own needs. For every student, the goal is also
set individually, which challenges each student to greater heights of
success, whatever their level of understanding. A student who is always
scoring well, and gets full marks, is given materials that challenge him so
that he is not resting on his successes but moves constantly forward
without waiting for other students to catch up with him. At the same time,
the students at the bottom of the class are also encouraged because the
goals are according to their level of understanding. All students feel good
when they are challenged at their level and feel satisfied in being able to
accomplish the goals set for them.
What is the effect of NURTURE INTERNATIONAL on the self-confidence of
the student?
NURTURE INTERNATIONAL boosts a students' self-confidence by
arranging learning according to individual needs. Since effort and
improvement are valued more than accomplishment, therefore, all
students get a sense of accomplishment whether they are ahead of their
classes or struggling with the learning of some concepts. This is because
all students progress and their progress is acknowledged and celebrated.
How will the new NURTURE INTERNATIONAL programme affect the
motivation level of the students?
Students need both support and challenge. With goal-setting which is
built-in within the NURTURE INTERNATIONAL process of learning,
students are motivated to put in their best efforts. It is an intrinsic desire
to excel and to compete with oneself.
Why change from the conventional system?
The focus of NURTURE INTERNATIONAL is on understanding and
application of concepts, and not rote memorization. John Holt in 'How
Students Fail' writes that "the true test of intelligence is not how much we
know how to do but how we behave when we don't know what to do."
The NURTURE INTERNATIONAL approach helps your student learn
without the fear of examinations and exam pressures. In real life too,
these are the necessary skills for success.
The system allows for ordinary students to perform better and all
students to maximize their potential. No student is left behind and all
students are propelled forward.
What is the role of the teacher in NURTURE INTERNATIONAL?
The role of the teacher is also different. A teacher is like a doctor who first
diagnoses and understands a student's needs. She supports the continued
growth of each and every student, reinforcing the areas of his/her
strength and gently guiding the student in overcoming his/her areas of
difficulty and in reaching new heights of success. She draws no limits to
any student's growth. She believes entirely in each student's ability to do
well in life and in every student as potentially the light of this world. She
sees the student as a partner in the learning process and believes that
"Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire." (WB Yeats)
Is the NURTURE INTERNATIONAL rigourous enough to prepare students for
board examinations?
If the fundamentals are strong, then the results will automatically show
at the 10th and 12th grade levels. By the time a student reaches this level,
he will also be more confident because he will have had extensive training
in exam taking and in goal setting. Practice in exam techniques is given
from the earliest years and students learn to study smarter, not just
harder. In NURTURE INTERNATIONAL, there are six tests, instead of two
per year, which are used for diagnostic and formative purposes.
Why is there a new marking scheme and why is there no zero?
In the NURTURE INTERNATIONAL Assessment, each question is based on
a single concept that the student is supposed to know. There are 3 sub-
questions for each question. Each sub-question is allocated marks out of
10. Therefore, there are 30 marks per question. In the traditional system,
however, marks are given out of 1 or 2. It is not possible with so low a
base of marks to give full credit for a student's effort. As no student has
zero knowledge, there is no scientific or moral basis to give student a
zero. In NURTURE INTERNATIONAL, the lowest mark is always 1. In the
new marking scheme, since this applies to all students, the relative
distinctions are still maintained based in which better prepared

Philippines. Sunita has worked in and traveled to some 30 countries. She
has worked both at the top policy levels with governments in reforming of
education top-down, and at the grassroots level with her own
experimental schools in Prague, the Czech Republic and in Iceland. She
has also been involved in the academic development aspects of her family
run schools in India as well as educational efforts of her NGO, DEVI, based
in Lucknow, India. As an overseas student in England, Sunita taught
tuitions in Mathematics and English to her juniors and peers. In order to
make ends meet while a student in London, Sunita taught over 50
students and ran a tutorial center out of her rented home. With her
passion for mathematics and physics and her practical experience with
students unmotivated to learn, Sunita acquired a lot of insight into what
motivates a student especially in a subject like mathematics. Her scientific
training combined with her practical experience of running her own
schools, Sunita has been able to create a highly objective and scientific
basis for the development of skills in students.
