Welcome back to the summer term and to the children’s’ final term in Year 3. We continue
our study of the core subjects of English, Maths and Science, and our project this term is
One highlight of the term will be the swimming course, when the children go each morning
for three weeks to the Sports Village for a lesson. Two qualified instructors will be teaching
the children and we are expecting great achievements, as well as lots of fun, from this
We will focus on adventure and mystery stories, stories by the same author (Anthony
Brown), letter writing and humorous poetry. The children will continue to develop their
reading skills through guided reading.
This term the class will continue to work on all areas of Maths including shape, capacity,
fractions, written methods of calculation, money and time. You can help at home by
continuing to consolidate the work the children do in class. In addition, we will be working on
mental strategies for problem solving and number work.
Our project work is Science based this term and is entitled ‘Water World’. During our
studies we will visit Cilfynydd Water Education centre to take part in a river study.
International Primary Curriculum (IPC):
Our main project this term will be ‘water’ including the study the location of rivers in Wales
and also follow the ‘journey’ that the river takes from its source to the sea. We will look at
the effect of water erosion on the landscape. This is an inclusive scheme of work based on
key skills. The children enjoy this way of learning, and are full of enthusiasm for all its
various aspects. This project will incorporate Geography, History, Art and ICT
This term we will be having athletics lessons. Our P.E. sessions are on Tuesday (indoor)
and Thursday (outdoor) and I would appreciate your help in ensuring the children have
the correct kit on those days. Due to Health and Safety issues, the children are not
allowed to wear jewellery during P.E. and Games.
The children approach the learning of Welsh in a variety of ways; they will read and write in
Welsh as well as practise their oral skills.
Curriculum Support Programs: Throughout this term, some children will be participating
within our curriculum support programs lead by Mrs Mitchell and Mrs Ash.
In addition to reading, written homework is given on a weekly basis and is to be handed in
before Friday. The children will have a spelling test every Friday. They will bring home their
spellings every Friday to learn. Please use a few minutes each evening to use the Look,
Cover, Write, and Check method. There is usually a spelling pattern each week, which makes
it easier for the children to internalise and recall. Please return the spelling books each
Friday, ready for the new spellings.
In Glasllwch the children are encouraged to participate in their own learning, by asking them
what they want to find out about in connection with our project. Please discuss this with
your child and extend their learning at home through relevant books, internet research,
I hope you find this information useful so that we can work together to develop the
children’s’ knowledge and understanding. If you have any further questions or concerns
please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to continuing to work with you.
