SECTION II: MAIN PURPOSE OF POSITION
Please summarize the general nature and purpose of the position briefly below. Describe in
concise terms how the position relates to the mission of the department.
The mission of Bibliographic & Metadata Services is to provide access to library materials and to
maintain accurate information in the library's online catalog. This position performs copy cataloging
of library materials to make them accessible to the UMBC community. This position also coordinates
material mending and special formats processing.


SECTION III: DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
Please describe in detail the duties assigned to the position and indicate the approximate

70%           Perform complex copy cataloging of library materials with an emphasis on
              media/special formats by identifying appropriate records in the USMAI database or
              OCLC WorldCat and modifying records in accordance with UMBC and USMAI
              cataloging policies and procedures.
15%           Perform pre-order bibliographic searching for media/special formats. Identify
              appropriate bibliographic records in the USMAI database or OCLC WorldCat for
              ordering.
 5%           Supervise mending and media/special formats processing activities. Hires, trains,
              supervises and evaluates student assistants in this area.
 5%           Participate in database maintenance and cataloging projects.
 5%           Perform other duties as assigned.

SECTION IV: DECISIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Please describe the major decisions and recommendations made by this position in carrying out
its assigned job duties.
This position decides whether or not bibliographic records available in the USMAI database or OCLC
WorldCat accurately describe library materials being copy cataloged or considered for order. This
position decides whether or not materials can be mended. If materials can be mended, this position
decides what and how the repairs will be done. This position decides on the hiring and firing of the
mending and special processing student assistant.

SECTION V: CONTACTS
Please list the persons or organizations with whom this position will have contact (both internal
and external to UMBC), and the nature and frequency of such contacts.
Internally, this position will have routine contacts with other staff and student assistants in
Bibliographic & Metadata Services as part of the processing workflow. Routine contacts with library
staff in Circulation, Collection Management, Acquisitions, Reference and Media concerning mending,
replacement, pre-order searching, physical processing and media/special formats material issues.
Other than rare informational or training sessions that are held for USMAI as a whole, there are no
external contacts that are necessary for the daily functioning of this position.

Must have vision sufficient to read print materials and VDT displays; must have manual dexterity
sufficient to input data/commands by computer keyboard and to remove books from a truck in order to
copy catalog.
