Research Project Read this document periodically for updates! OPTION 1: You are required to investigate on one of the following topics: - Solar panels (flexible solar panels) - Transformers - Wind power - Light dimmers - Solenoids - Air fresheners - Balancing circuit - Battery-less flashlight- Design your own! - Electric Shocker / Zapper – Snapshot Stunner - Guitar Tuner - Battery chargers or rechargeable batteries (supper capacitors) - Alternative energy projects: why? Ezine articles For each topic you must discuss the following: - Existing types and their differences - Internal architecture and diagrams - Pricing, range of operation - Pictures of different designs - Applications examples - Description of basic operation; include some formulas if possible - Experimental data Report and grading: 1- Use the provided Formal Lab Report Template for your major project. You must complete all the sections related to your project. 2- Each group must submit one report. No more than two people in each group, please! 3- Reports which are accompanied with a demo of a working prototype will receive 10 extra points. 4- If no working prototype is available, the group must provide a short presentation (5-10 min.) 5- Please read these important notes on how to write your formal Lab Report. 6- Note that reports with no experimental data will not be accepted. OPTION 2: In this project you are required to design a delay circuit, which delays the input signal by 6.00 seconds. The basic operation of the circuit is shown below: 60 second delay Input signal is activated Output signal is activated Activating Your delay Alarm Mechanism circuit System (switch) Design guidelines: 1- You can only use passive devices (capacitors, inductors, resistors, relays, switches, etc.) and basic logic devices (AND, OR, etc. gates). 2- You can use multiple power sources. 3- All components and values used in the design must be realistic (super capacitors do not work for this design; 1 Farad capacitors are difficult to obtain). 4- No more than two people can be in the group. Best design criteria: The design which generates a delay closest to 6.0 seconds with the lowest number of components and the least number of power sources will be considered as the best design. Only designs which generate at least 5.0 seconds of delay can be considered for the best deign. The group with best design will receive 10 extra points! Report and grading: 7- Each group must submit one report. 8- Use the provided Formal Lab Report Template for your major project. You must complete each section in the report template. 9- Please read these important notes on how to write your formal Lab Report. 10- The group with a working design (with delay larger than 3.0 seconds) will receive 10 extra points. 11- All reports must be accompanied with complete simulation results. Important deadlines: May 2: submit the first draft of your report. May 9: demonstrate / presentation. May 14: final draft of the project must be submitted.
