Steering Committee Meeting
October 17, 2005 3:30 p.m.
Minutes
1. Introductions
Gary Alexander, Leslie Blevins, Rusty Clifford, Donna Cole, Nancy
Gallenstein, Kimberly Hall-Alt, Shari Hoskins, Tony Mennett, Joyce Rains,
Linda Ramey, Brian Yontz and Laura Teeters.
2. Review of minutes from April, 2005
3. WCCS Concerns
a. Frank Nicholas 21st Century Grant
i. N. Gallenstein spoke to this topic. She stated that this year there
are quite a few freshmen enrolled in the EDE 230 class, which
corresponds with the grant. Some students seem apprehensive and
the teacher is new. The teacher is trying to encourage the students
to get involved and be more “hands on.”
1. She added that Thursdays have historically been a difficult
day to fill with Wright State University (WSU) students
due to their course schedules.
2. Additionally, there are four new coordinators. Since there
are new people coordinating the program, each person is
trying to find his/her role.
3. She also noted that even more West Carrollton City
Schools (WCCS) students signed up this year compared to
last.
ii. B. Yontz said that through this grant, WSU is able to hire someone
to work at Frank Nicholas and he is going to talk to classes about
having students do this through work-study.
b. C.F. Holliday Tutoring project
i. S. Hoskins shared information about this endeavor. She said that
C. Keener is being switched to another class and the person that
did it last year may move for the winter quarter to another school.
The possibility was discussed that M. Theis could take it on that
quarter. Then C. Keener would do spring and summer. There is a
concern from parents and the school psychologist that some
students have been repeating the class and are becoming familiar to
the assessments being used. This is particularly important when
the same assessments are used to determine those students who
would benefit from special education. The possibility of skipping
one quarter (winter) has also been discussed. This may provide an
opportunity to work on getting different kids involved in the
project. There is the option of having it at either C.F. Holliday or
Frank Nicholas.

4. WSU Concerns
a. Winter / Spring Field Placements
i. Request/Confirmed Placement lists were distributed.
b. ECIS Placements
i. The committee was informed that this program is growing and part
of it requires a field experience. Therefore, in the Winter Quarter
of the 2006-2007 school year, WSU will have students who need
placements. Cooperating Teachers (CTs) must hold this credential
(K-3, Early Childhood settings) to host interns.
c. Winter / Spring Field Orientation
i. B. Yontz asked if the district would be willing to have the
upcoming winter/spring orientation held in the district as it was in
the fall. An invitation will be sent to the CTs and administrators
are welcome.
1. The orientation will be held December 13th @ 3:30pm in
the Hackett Center. It will last about 2 hours.
a. Suggestions and feedback from the committee were
as follows:
i. Perhaps have a 20 minute meet and greet in
the beginning and end.
ii. D. Cole added that alterations would be
made to the format to have teachers talk to
each other and discuss about mentoring.
iii. L. Ramey stated that the feedback she
received about the fall orientation was that
the CTs found it too repetitive.
iv. N. Gallenstein suggested just having a set
orientation for new teachers.
v. D. Cole and N. Gallenstein stated that
feedback from the students was that they
were pleased to be there with teachers and
each other.
vi. B. Yontz asked whether there could be a bus
tour of the district.
d. Journal Article
i. B. Yontz stated that a goal from last year was for WSU and WCCS
to jointly write a journal article about the partnership (including
history, the tutoring project, and the grant). There was a meeting
to collaborate about this project. The request was made for
someone from the district to be part of the collaboration. It was
stated that M.Theis would like to participate and D. Cole will
collaborate with R. Clifford. L. Ramey will edit for D. Cole.
e. Concern Conferences
i. D. Cole would like to encourage teachers to bring concerns to the
Office of Professional Experiences (OPFE) early and often to help
students get on the right track.
1. She added that either the teacher or student may ask for a
transfer. The OPFE will collaborate with the building
administer so the relevant information can be passed onto
the CT. It was also recommended that the CT and/or
administrator conduct an interview with the potential
student prior to the placement.
f. MC/AYA/MA Inquiry Project and consent forms for human subjects,
pictures, and videos
i. L. Ramey talked about the general process for Middle Childhood
(MC) students working on their inquiry project. She stated that
they typically spend time in the summer thinking about their group
and conducting a literature review. They then settle into topics
(For example, extracurricular activities and success in the
classroom, mathematics and gender, etc.) MC students are
encouraged to present their projects at conferences.
ii. D. Cole talked about the procedure for consent along with using
human subjects in the district.
1. R. Clifford stated that a consent form was sent out at the
beginning of the year through the district. WSU is covered
under that document. The best approach is for WSU
students to find out which students are not able to have
their pictures taken (since there are so few). Additionally,
for WCCS students to be used as human subjects, WSU
students are to use the same procedure as WCCS personnel.
They are to create a permission/awareness form to be sent
home to parents/caregivers after it has been approved by R.
Clifford and the building principal.
2. It was stated that it would be nice for WSU students to give
parents/caregivers an invitation to attend symposium
should they present their project.
g. Other
i. S. Hoskins said that the group of people at C.F. Holliday is doing a
great job.
ii. R. Clifford noted that a large number of students attended training.
iii. N. Gallenstein said that Tara Brand was hired at Frank Nicholas.
iv. L. Blevins said her intern, Jessica Metzger, is doing well.
5. Announcements
a. WSU Network Steering Committee—January 19, 2006 @ 9:30 in WSU
