JANUARY 7&8 -- ARRIVAL & ORIENTATION
Saturday January 7: Students arrive Ataturk International Airport in Istanbul. Bags
could be anywhere.
Sunday January 8: Orientation to Istanbul

Week ONE – TWO: ISTANBUL
Study Intensive Turkish with language teachers and language assistants. Continue
orientation of Istanbul – last one in the Turkish bath pays.

Week THREE – Week FOUR: TRAVEL to SOUTH WEST of TURKEY
Study Greco-Roman Christianity with one of the world’s leading experts on the
Churches of Revelation.
Fly to Izmir (Smyrna). Home stay in Izmir with trips to Pergamum & Sardis.
Bus south visiting Ephesus, Priene, Hierapolis and Antalya. Visit the Sufi centre of
Konya & the ancient Christian cave city of Cappadocia

Week FIVE – TEN: ISTANBUL
Develop daily rhythm of classes and activities in Istanbul
Variety of field trips
Weekly service projects, for example serving some of the many refugees in the city
Hear from range of Turkish academics, political and religious leaders

During this period there will be two free long weekends in which students are
encouraged to explore Istanbul more thoroughly or travel in small groups outside of
Istanbul, perhaps visiting Gallipoli or Troy. Or they may just wash their socks.

Week ELEVEN: *TRAVEL to SOUTH EAST of TURKEY
Visit Diyarbakir, Mardin, Urfa, Harran and Mount Nemrut
Focus on the Kurdish and Arab culture of Anatolia, past and present
Visit monasteries and churches dating from the 3rd century, hear worship in Aramaic.
(*circumstances permitting)

Week TWELVE: ISTANBUL
Review lectures, some papers and presentations due, exams

Week THIRTEEN: CAIRO
Visit key pharaonic, Christian, and Muslim sites in and around Cairo
Visit with religious and political leaders and development projects
Visit Alexandria
Worship on Orthodox Palm Sunday with Coptic Christians

Week FOURTEEN: SINAI
Travel through Sinai, visiting St. Catherine’s monastery and climbing Mount Sinai.
Stay in Dahab and snorkel in the Red Sea
Cross border into Israel

Week FIFTEEN & SIXTEEN: ISRAEL/PALESTINE
Stay in Bethlehem and Jerusalem with trips to the Dead Sea, Galilee, Nazareth,
Hebron, and Tel Aviv.
Meet with Israeli families, military personnel, academics, rabbis and peace activists.
Meet with Palestinian families, peace activists, resistance fighters, and priests. Meet
with US political representatives, activists and Christian workers.
