b. Birmingham- one of most segregated city in U.S.
c. Action done, but not permanent
a. People did not follow through with their promises to stop segregation
b. Had to postpone several times before actually going through with non-violent
5. No more delay
a. Finally couldn’t delay anymore and acted; non-violent sit in
b. Direct action helps to create a situation to open negotiation
6. No time to act?
a. Why didn’t give city time to act- no time to act is a “good time.”
b. The word “Wait” technically means “never”
7. Just or unjust laws
a. Just: uplifts human personality
b. Unjust: makes minority work in favor of majority; conformity

a. More concerned about order than justice
b. The protest brings up the hidden tensions, although they are still alive

a. Disappointing because refuse to understand the freedom movement
b. Contradictory because they preach the bible
c. Came to Birmingham to reach out to white religious leadership
13. What kind of people worship here
a. Shocked because the people didn’t believe in freedom movement
b. Church was powerful when they were able to record everyone’s opinions.
14. Different Now
a. Churches today are weak
b. Church Defends status quo
a. Some have broken loose from conformity
b. Don’t support their own church anymore, but one that does not deal with
16. A commended police force
a. Commended for keeping order and preventing violence
b. Wrong to use moral means to preserve immoral ends
c. Wish you had commended the sit-inners instead
d. One day, they south will be FREE!
17. Long Letter
a. I’ve never written a letter this long before
b. Its long because I have nothing more to do
c. Would have been better if I had a nice place to write, instead of jail
d. I hope you understand why I wrote this, and racial segregation will soon fail.
