The Community Relations Service was established by Title X of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The agency
serves as the Department's "peacemaker" for community conflicts and tensions arising from differences of
race, color, and national origin. The Headquarters office, located in Washington, D.C., coordinates the
efforts of 10 Regional Offices and four Field Offices. Regional Offices are located in: Boston, New York,
Philadelphia, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Kansas City, Denver, Los Angeles, and Seattle. Field Offices are

Literacy Network
Community Literacy Intern

Literacy Network is a non-profit organization that provides one-to-one tutoring for adults in Dane County
who wish to improve their reading, writing, or speaking skills in English. We are currently looking for
interns to assist in our Community Literacy tutoring programs. Community Literacy is a weekly tutoring
program that allows ESL and literacy students to meet with temporary, volunteer tutors while they wait
for personal tutors. Every site offers free childcare and individualized lesson plans for each student/tutor
pair. Interns will staff one of six Community Literacy programs. We are currently hiring for six
internships.

Event Planning Internship
Graphic Design Internship
The Event Planner Intern will assist in all aspects of planning, implementation, and on-site coordination
for all major United Way events. Annually we host 12-15 events, ranging in size from 25-750 people. At
each event leaders from our community are present, including business executives representing the private
and public sectors. Our events are an opportunity to highlight the work our volunteers have made
possible. Since each event is sponsored, it also gives an opportunity to work closely with sponsoring
companies. Major aspects of internship include: Event location research, writing marketing materials,
compiling RSVP event responses, collaborating with various vendors, serving as an on-site resource
person at the events, and preparing post-event evaluation results and correspondence.

Software Development Summer Intern

The goal of our summer internship program is to expose extraordinary candidates to the projects and
environment associated with full-time work in quantitative analysis and software development at the D. E.
Shaw group. Interns interact with various trading groups and gain valuable work experience while
demonstrating their skills on a variety of real-world projects. For quantitative analyst interns, these
projects might include applying sophisticated numerical techniques and writing software to develop and
analyze statistical models for our computerized financial trading strategies, or researching financial
literature to identify new trading ideas and creating simulations to test them. Software development
interns work closely with full-time employees to build tools for the analysis of financial instruments as
well as to design and deploy real-time, scalable applications for the firm's highly automated trading
activities. Working closely with quants, developers, and other senior staff as mentors, interns can expect
an environment conducive to strong professional development. In addition, regularly scheduled social
events give interns the opportunity to interact with colleagues and learn about the goings-on at the firm as

Internship—1 year

We are looking for the *best* engineers, scientists, and hackers. You don't need to be a biologist; we can
teach you biology. You do need to be a fast learner, passionate, brilliant, and tenacious. We have two
types of one year internships available. Software: You will be working closely with our DNA hackers to
write the code that provides the backbone for our synthetic biology pipeline to make biology easier to
engineer. Work may include programming to control robotic DNA construction, automate measurement
processes, design genes, or manage our process workflow for building organisms. It will depend what's
most important once you start - this is a fast moving field and we're a young company. You don't need
previous biology experience: Ginkgo is a great environment for amazing programmers to learn to hack
biology. Wetware: You will be working in the lab on a project in collaboration with one of Ginkgo's DNA
Hackers. Our core technology is high-throughput construction of DNA for programming cells; however
the internship might involve other new technologies for making biology easier to engineer. It will depend
what's most important once you start - this is a fast moving field and we're a young company. Previous
biology lab experience not required, but preferred. Previous experience with hardware or software
hacking also a plus.
