Dear Friends and Family,
Hello from Layne, Rachel, Ashlyn, and our new baby girl due in July. I hope this letter finds you
happy and healthy. As you may or may not know, Rachel and I are taking one of the biggest steps of our
lives. I am leaving a lifetime career in the towing business to pursue one of my greatest passions. We are
moving our home from the majestic Rocky Mountains to the beautiful hills of northern Alabama to work as
a youth pastor at a church.
For the past 10 years I have worked with the teenagers at New Life Church in Colorado Springs. I
am sure you are aware of the many difficulties young people face growing up in this new millennium. It
has been a joy for me to help them make good, solid, healthy decisions. So many of them just need
someone to listen to them and let them know that they are valuable. The struggle for me has always been
trying to balance a career in the very demanding towing industry with trying to find more time to build
relationships with young people. Time with them makes such a significant difference.
Rachel and I now have the opportunity to take all we’ve learned in business and ministry to pour
our entire lives into young people. Chris Hodges, pastor of Church of the Highlands, recently asked me to
join him in ministry as his youth pastor. Chris was the first youth pastor at New Life Church and is the one
who I learned from and trained under. Just 10 weeks ago he planted this new church in Birmingham
Alabama. It is a non-denominational church similar to New Life.
The church had its first service on February 4th, 2001. The original plan was for us to move to
Birmingham in September to work with the young people. Our hope was that by that time there might be
25 or so young people. But since the first service in February, the church has exploded to 200. It’s
absolutely amazing, considering the average church in America is less than 100. Most of the growth has
come from over 100 young people from 13 to 25 years old. This is the group I am going to work with.
This rapid growth has motivated us to move our time line up to get there as soon as possible.
There is so much to gain by capitalizing on the current momentum and begin to mentor that group
immediately.
Last week we sold our home in Colorado Springs and purchased one in Birmingham. We will be
moving there around May 20th. This letter is to update you about this major turn in our lives and to give you
an opportunity to invest in the lives of these young people. Generally a church is not able to pay a youth
pastor until it is well established and can financially support him/her. Yet with all of this momentum, it
would be a shame to wait until fall and possibly lose some of the young people that are already there. That
is why I am raising support, much like a missionary, from June through December of 2001. This support
will allow us to begin our ministry now.
You can be a part of this effort by giving a single gift or sending monthly support from June
through December. All contributions are 100% tax deductible. You will receive a contribution statement
next January for tax purposes. Regardless of whether you are able to give or not, your moral support is just
as important. I will send out letters throughout the year to update you on our progress.
Thank you! Your investment will have a strong impact on young lives!
