                            Minis and Junior Section
                                Chairman – Roy Calder

S ummer has gone so quickly, if you can call it summer, and I am sure everyone is
looking forward to getting back to School. Well if not school, I am sure you are all
looking forward to getting back to Rugby.

You will have noticed that Gino and Kath Sonczak stood down at the end of last season
as the Joint Chairs of the Minis and Junior section and it is with much trepidation that I
have stepped into their shoes. I would like to take this opportunity of thanking both Gino
and Kath for all their unstinting efforts over the last six years which have resulted in
Glossop RFC having the biggest Mini and Junior Section in the area. I promise to do
everything that I can, to build on this success and ensure that we have a rugby legacy
which will grow from strength to strength into the future and build a sure foundation for
Rugby in Glossop at all age groups.

W ith another year upon us we need to look at getting everyone back into the fold
again. However this year will be slightly different as we will be combining the
Registration event with “SALE SHARKS BIG NIGHT OUT”! This will be held at the club
on Tuesday the 31st of August from 6:30pm. This is a great chance for the children of
all ages to meet some of the stars of our local professional outfit as well as get some
excellent tips and advice. Training will officially begin the following Sunday, the 5th of
September.

We will need to re-register the Under 7s, 10s and 13s with Nottinghamshire,
Leicestershire and Derbyshire this year and while we will try and make this as simple as
possible we would greatly appreciate it if you can ensure that you have a filled in NLD
registration form, along with a GRFC one as well as two passport type photographs. The
other age groups only need to complete the GRFC form.

If you cannot make the Registration Session we will have a registration desk available
for the following two Sundays. Alternatively if you want you can return the completed
forms to Roy Calder, 6 Bute Street, Glossop SK13 7PZ along with the appropriate fees.

M embership fees for the Club remain as they were last year and we would ask you to
choose the Membership package which best suits your requirements. The
Membership fees for 2010/11will be as follows:

   1. Family Membership £30.00 per year + £3.00 per child
This entitles the whole family to become club member, with one vote at the AGM
and a free rental of the clubhouse for a function of your choice
   2. Child Membership £15.00 per year per child
   3. Playing Membership £3.00
This is only available for children of fully registered and paid up senior members

W eekly subscriptions will also remain at £2.50 per session. We would like to make
this task as simple as possible and will once again offer up-front payment at £70,
again saving £15. Please remember that even though you have paid your fees the kids
still need to “sign in” and get an attendance card for each session.
W hile we have been extremely successful in building the club up over the past years
we have to ensure that our efforts don’t wane. It is critical for the club as a whole
that we have new children joining us, not only in the Tot’s section but at all age groups
throughout the club. While we are trying to get rugby activities at the local schools the
best approach is personal contact either by the children or the parents. So if you know of
any child who would be interested in rugby; regardless of age, sex, size, shape or ability
please bring them along and we will only be too happy to introduce them to the fastest
growing sport in the UK.

C oaching is a critical part of what we offer and, as with previous years, we will be
building on the existing skills base we have and ensuring that all our coaches have
the ability to build on their existing skills. All our Lead Coaches are now qualified to the
high standards set down by the RFU and we have an ongoing programme to ensure that
they and their support teams are able to improve on these by taking part in the
numerous courses run regionally. Similarly we will be re-running the rugby specific First
Aid course to ensure that the children are in the best possible hands.

Rugby is all about taking part, whether as a player, an administrator, a coach or an
assistant. As such the club is always on the lookout for people who are willing to put in a
couple of hours a week to ensure that the kids get the best out of their rugby
experience. To this end we will be running a “Start Rugby” course throughout the season
to ensure that anyone who wants to can get involved with confidence. The courses will
provide the basics of the game as well provide grounding in good coaching practice. If
you are interested in helping in any way please have a word with any of the Coaches or
Roy Calder.

T he kit shop will be open on Registration Sunday and at the beginning of each session.
We endeavour to keep all your Rugby requirements such as GUM SHIELDS, shirts,
socks, studs etc. In addition we would also like to maintain the kit swap service so any
old, useable kit that is too small would be greatly appreciated.

I nternational tickets for England’s Six Nation campaign are now available and anyone
interested in adult or children’s tickets should get their hands on them as soon as
possible as they are going fast in the run up to next year’s World Cup. Please look for
additional details on the club website or contact Roy Calder.

I n closing would like to take the opportunity to thank all those who have been
supportive during this transition phase and I hope that I can live up to the trust put in
me. I’m trying to fill some big shoes here – even if they do have high heels! I hope that
with the continued support of everyone; parents, children etc. we can continue to build
the club in the years to come.

However to do so we need to have your input as the year progresses I will be looking for
ideas to make the Mini and Junior section even better. I hope to be able to set up a
regular e-mail newsletter so that everyone knows what is happening in both the Minis
and Juniors, as well as the club as a whole, starting with the attached Events Diary. So if
you have one please make sure your e-mail is on this year’s registration form. More
information and news will be available on the NEW and IMPROVED Website at
www.glossop-rugbyufc.co.uk check it out and become part of the GRUFC Community.

Please do not hesitate to get hold of me personally if there is anything you want to raise.
I’ll be the short haired Scots man running about like daft on Sunday mornings; but I
promise I don’t bite – well not much!

Yours in Rugby

Roy Calder
