									    Japan-Korea Joint Symposium on Vascular

                               Biology, 2005

We extend our sincere welcome to our colleagues from Japan and new
participants to this third Japan-Korean Vascular Biology Conference. It is gratifying
to see the growth of field as well as increasing participants and research support in
both countries past three years.

As we all know that, vascular diseases are responsible for more death and disability
than all other diseases combined. Silently, often without warning, they can strike
any one, at any age, at any time. Disorders of arteries and veins manifest
themselves in an array of devastating, debilitating conditions including high blood
pressure, aneurysms, kidney disease, amputations and strokes. All tissue growth
depends on the new vessel including malignant ones and keeping organ to function
depends on the vessel’s homeostatic integrity. All of us know someone who has
been, or will be, the victim of vascular disease.

Although the emergence of angiogenesis research was fairly short, we have seen
generation of greater interest and brought investigators from numerous discipline
of medicine. Despite of early shortcomings of angiogenic and anti-angiogenic
therapeutics development, recent advancement in vascular research is improving
the treatment of vascular diseases through a better understanding of fundamental
vascular biology and translational approach to the clinics.

Please join us in this enriching experience of sharing new developments in
angiogenesis and vascular biology at 3rd Japan-Korean Vascular Biology Conference.

                                                              Soo Il Chung, Ph.D.
