Rationale

        Why do you need this policy?


Objectives

        What do you want to achieve with this policy?

Some matters to consider:
   The development of prevention strategies that may include personnel policies
     (which may be cross-referenced), preventative education, staff supervision.
   Clarification of the nature of liaison with other agencies and procedures for
     responding to suspected child abuse.
   Ensuring all those involved in the service are aware that they can and should
     report suspected abuse.


Procedures

Home-based licensing criteria HS28 requires that documentation relating to processes
for prevention of child abuse and procedures for responding to suspected child abuse is
consistent with Child Youth and Family or New Zealand Police guidelines.

Consider procedures and processes for educators, co-ordinators and management in
relation to:

    1. Training about how to recognise and respond to child abuse.

    2. Using professional agencies with specialist child abuse knowledge.

    3. Maintaining familiarity with laws and regulations which protect children from
       child abuse.

    4. Responding to suspected child abuse in ways that ensure:
        confidentiality
        appropriate record-keeping and reporting within the service and with outside
          agencies
        appropriate informing of parents
        the suspected person has no further access to children attending the service
          while the case is under investigation
        support for person reporting and child reported on
        personnel under suspicion are directed to appropriate legal/professional
          advice and support.

    5. The selection/employment of suitable staff and contractors.
