ROBINSON Maureen K. Robinson is the author of Nonprofit Boards that Work: The End of One-Size-Fits-All Governance, published by John Wiley & Sons. She is a consultant and speaker on topics relating to the leadership and management of the nonprofit sector. In her work with nonprofit organizations, she focuses on governance and organizational development, executive director coaching, and strategic planning. Ms. Robinson founded the education program of the National Center for Nonprofit Boards (now called BoardSource). During her eightyear tenure, she brought information, ideas and services to a broad cross-section of nonprofit organizations in the U.S. and abroad about the value of governance and its role in strengthening the effectiveness of the independent, nongovernmental sector. Prior to joining the National Center for Nonprofit Boards, Ms. Robinson held a variety of positions in the museum field. She was the director of legislative affairs at the American Association of Museums, and served in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Museums at the Smithsonian Institution, where she conducted executive-level searches and managed special projects. In addition to her most recent book, Ms. Robinson is the author of Developing the Nonprofit Board: Strategies for Educating and Motivating Board Members and The Chief Executive’s Role in Developing the Nonprofit Board, both published by the National Center for Nonprofit Boards (BoardSource). She writes regularly about current topics in leadership and management and is a columnist for the magazine, Contributions. FORD W. BELL Ford Bell, newly appointed President & CEO of the American Association of Museums has more than 30 years’ experience as a nonprofit executive, board chair, donor, trustee, educator and scientist. Mr. Bell has been passionate about museums his entire life. His grandfather, James Ford Bell, was a driving force in building and developing the Museum of Natural History at the University of Minnesota, where Ford Bell has served as an advisory board member for more than 20 years. His many visits to the museum were a factor in his decision to become a veterinarian. Since 1995, he has served as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Oncology at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. He currently serves as chairman of the James Ford Bell Foundation and has been a trustee of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts for nearly a decade. While board chair Mr. Bell helped raise $103 million as part of the institute’s “Bring Art to Life” capital campaign. From 1995 to 2005, he served as President and CEO of the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation. He has advocated extensively for science learning, conservation and community health initiatives through his affiliation with a wide range of organizations. He was a candidate for the U.S. Senate in Minnesota in 2006. WIT OSTRENKO Wit Ostrenko has served as President of the Museum of Science & Industry for the last 20 years. He is a 50year resident of Florida, with 32 years in the Museum field. He has a Bachelors in Zoology from Florida Atlantic University, a Masters in Aquatic Ecology from the University of Miami, and Ph.D. work in Oceanography. Wit is President of the Association of Science Technology Centers (ASTC) and past Chair and currently board member of the Florida Association of Museums (FAM). He is actively involved with several Tampa Bay community and civic organizations. He lectures on the museum profession, science topics, and creative problem solving. He leads trips into the Florida environment particularly the Everglades and the Big Cypress Swamp to help people understand and appreciate the state's natural beauty and its resources. He has led several trips through Florida for the Smithsonian Associates Travel Program. Wit has led the MOSI effort to make it a successful Florida science center, which features the nation's first Head Start, a public library, an elementary school, a charter middle school, and a children’s science center. Wit is an avid sailor of Florida waters, both cruising and racing.
